A microcomputer-controlled positive reward operant conditioning paradigm was developed to measure auditory sensitivity of the goldfish (Carassius auratus). Although other procedures have been used to measure hearing sensitivity in fish, all earlier studies have been done with some form of aversive conditioning. Goldfish were trained with a positive reinforcement method to determine hearing thresholds at 200, 500, 1000, 1500, and 2000 Hz. The audiogram obtained in this study is in close agreement with thresholds obtained with instrumental avoidance and classical conditioning procedures involving negative reinforcement (shock). The similarity in threshold data validates the effectiveness of the positive reinforcement paradigm described here. The major advantages of the present paradigm are the following: (1) No physical punishment such as electric shock is used, and (2) the versatility of the system allows easy modification for a variety of experiments.  相似文献

A threshold procedure using operant behavioral techniques with positive reinforcement was developed after initial efforts with avoidance behavioral procedures proved unsatisfactory. In the first of three experiments the operant threshold procedure was tested by determining masked auditory thresholds for trains of clicks. In a second experiment, similar techniques were used to measure thresholds for electrical stimulation of the brain. The last experiment, again an auditory problem, involved a determination of the absolute thresholds for trains of short noise bursts as a function of the time between bursts. Middle ear malfunction proved to be a more severe problem than had been anticipated on the basis of reports in the literature. The threshold procedure, however, seems to be adequate for determination of absolute or masked thresholds with auditory or electrical stimuli.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed in which blind Ss, sighted Ss working in the dark, and sighted Ss working in the light were compared as to their efficiency on an auditory watchkeeping task. Absolute and differential auditory thresholds were measured in both experiments, and in the second experiment the groups also underwent a signal detection session under alerted conditions. There was some inconsistency as to relative performance of the sighted groups, but in both experiments the blind Ss were superior on the auditory watchkeeping task as to signals detected and effective sensitivity (d’). 1 This difference was not attributable to a difference in auditory sensitivity or to a criterion adopted for  相似文献

Using different warning signals and threshold stimuli, the thresholds, as determined by a method of limits, were found to rise monotonically as the interval between warning signal and threshold stimulus increased from I to 9 sec. It was found that the variability of the threshold did not increase as the threshold increased. Similar results were obtained for phosphene and auditory thresholds and with visual and auditory warnings; therefore the effect was considered to be central. Motokawa's finding of a minimum in the phosphene threshold 2 sec. after a flash of white light was not repeated. The rise in threshold was not obtained when the warning intervals were randomized and so seemed to depend on the use of fixed warning intervals. A model was developed relating threshold level to accuracy of anticipation of the end of the warning interval.  相似文献

Tone detection thresholds for a 10-kHz tone in NMRI mice were determined in psychoacoustic experiments using both a constant-stimuli procedure and a two-down/one-up adaptive-tracking procedure in the same subjects and applying identical threshold criteria (70.7% response probability). Constant-stimuli thresholds were on average 24 dB lower than adaptive-tracking thresholds, and there was a trend indicating that constant-stimuli thresholds were less variable than adaptive-tracking thresholds. Furthermore, in the constant-stimuli procedure the number of trials constituting the psychometric function could be reduced from 100 to 50 trials without a large loss of accuracy of threshold determination. In the constant-stimuli procedure, the threshold value was affected by the threshold criteria. The lowest and least variable constant-stimuli thresholds were obtained by applying signal detection theory and a criterion ofd′=1. Thus, the constant-stimuli procedure in combination with signal detection theory appears to be better suited than the adaptive-tracking procedure to determine auditory sensory thresholds.  相似文献

The SIAM yes-no task is an efficient bias-free adaptive procedure for estimating absolute thresholds, though it arguably requires further evaluation prior to its adoption into mainstream psychological research. We report two experiments undertaken in the auditory and gustatory modalities designed to assess the accuracy and efficiency of the SIAM method. In the first experiment, estimates of absolute thresholds for 1000-Hz tones obtained using a two-alternative forced choice adaptive procedure were compared to those obtained using both the SIAM yes-no task and a modification of the SIAM task incorporating the method of free response, the SIAM-rapid. In Experiment 2, we compared absolute thresholds for sucrose in solution obtained with either a two-alternative forced choice adaptive procedure or the SIAM yes-no task. Both experiments demonstrated the efficiency and validity of the SIAM approach, with SIAM thresholds proving to be equivalent to those obtained in the two-alternative forced choice tasks and to those reported in the literature.  相似文献

The authors conducted 3 experiments investigating the effects of aging on higher order auditory processes. They compared younger and older adults with respect to (a) their auditory channel capacity, (b) the extent of their top-down control over auditory gain, and (c) their ability to focus attention on a narrow band of frequencies. To ensure that subclinical cochlear processing deficits in older adults (e.g., higher thresholds, poorer discrimination of frequency and intensity differences) did not limit performance, the authors used only stimuli that were perfectly discriminable by all participants. No age differences were found in any of these experiments, suggesting that some higher order auditory processes (e.g., top-down control over auditory gain, auditory attention) are preserved in normal aging, despite numerous age-related declines in peripheral auditory functionality.  相似文献

Level-invariant detection refers to findings that thresholds in tone-in-noise detection are unaffected by roving-level procedures that degrade energy cues. Such data are inconsistent with ideas that detection is based on the energy passed by an auditory filter. A hypothesis that detection is based on a level-invariant temporal cue is advanced. Simulations of a leaky-integrator model, consisting of a bandpass filter, half-wave rectification, and a lowpass filter, account for thresholds in band-widening experiments. The decision variable is calculated from the discrete Fourier transform of the leaky-integrator output. A counterintuitive finding is the apparent disassociation of the phenomenon of critical bands estimated from band-widening experiments and the theory of auditory filters. Physiological plausibility is demonstrated by showing that a leaky integrator describes the discharge cadence of primary afferents for tone-in-noise stimuli as well as for complex periodic sounds.  相似文献

Auditory thresholds were determined in each subject on two different occasions, by a modified method of limits under 10 intensities of light. Coefficients of reliability and analyses of variance of the data showed significant reliability of responses to tones in introverts (I) and extraverts (E), under increasing intensities of light. The auditory responses were most reliable in I and least in ambiverts (A). The same visual stimuli produced the same effects on auditory sensitivity, in the same subjects, on different days. These effects included facilitation and inhibition of sensitivity in I, facilitation in E and A, and interaction of intensity conditions and personality type.  相似文献

Pattern effects associated with the perception of the temporal microstructure of auditory signals were examined. Temporal changes, or gaps, were introduced into auditory interval patterns produced by a sequence of pulses. Discrimination thresholds for positive, and for negative, gaps were obtained as a function of the surrounding pattern of intervals. Gap thresholds increase with the slope of the surrounding interval pattern. Gap thresholds are smaller when the gap interval represents an extension, rather than a reversal, of the surrounding pattern. The results are in agreement with Heise and Miller’s thresholds of tonal isolation from repeated melodies, and with Mangelsdorf’s visual extrapolation thresholds of point-of-collision. The agreement of results from diverse test situations suggests a non-specifiC., general patterning effect upon discontinuity thresholds.  相似文献

Behavioral thresholds of 6-month-old infants and adults were determined for 1/3-octave filtered clicks and 300-msec noise bursts with center frequencies ranging from .5 to 8 kHz. For noise bursts, differences between infant and adult thresholds were largest at low frequencies and smallest at 8 kHz. For clicks, infants’ thresholds were most like adults’ at 4 kHz, and age differences increased at both lower and higher frequencies. Differences between click and noise thresholds were significantly larger for infants than for adults at .5, 1, and 8 kHz, but not at 2 and 4 kHz. These results suggest that improvements in threshold for long-duration stimuli during infancy may not be accompanied by comparable changes in threshold at short durations. The delayed development of sensitivity to low- and high-frequency clicks appears consistent with maturational trends recently described for the auditory brainstem response.  相似文献

Three experiments were performed to examine listeners’ thresholds for identifying stimuli whose spectra were modeled after the vowels /i/ and /ε/, with the differences between these stimuli restricted to the frequency of the first formant. The stimuli were presented in a low-pass masking noise that spectrally overlapped the first formant but not the higher formants. Identification thresholds were lower when the higher formants were present than when they were not, even though the first formant contained the only distinctive information for stimulus identification. This indicates that listeners were more sensitive in identifying the first formant energy through its contribution to the vowel than as an independent percept; this effect is given the namecoherence masking protection. The first experiment showed this effect for synthetic vowels in which the distinctive first formant was supported by a series of harmonics that progressed through the higher formants. In the second two experiments, the harmonics in the first formant region were removed, and the first formant was simulated by a narrow band of noise. This was done so that harmonic relations did not provide a basis for grouping the lower formant with the higher formants; coherence masking protection was still observed. However, when the temporal alignment of the onsets and offsets of the higher and lower formants was disrupted, the effect was eliminated, although the stimuli were still perceived as vowels. These results are interpreted as indicating that general principles of auditory grouping that can exploit regularities in temporal patterns cause acoustic energy belonging to a coherent speech sound to stand out in the auditory scene.  相似文献

Research suggests a relationship between auditory distraction (such as environmental noises or a vocal cell phone conversation) and a decreased ability to detect and localize approaching vehicles. What is unclear is whether auditory vehicle perception is impacted more by distractions reliant on listening or distractions reliant on speaking (analogous to the two components of a vocal cell phone conversation). In two experiments, adult participants listened for approaching vehicle noises and while performing listening- and speaking-based secondary tasks. Participants were tasked with identifying when they first detect an approaching vehicle and when they no longer felt safe to cross in front of the approaching vehicle. For both experiments, the speaking task resulted in significantly later detection of approaching vehicles and riskier crossing thresholds than in the no-distraction and listening conditions. The listening secondary task significantly differed from the control condition in experiment 1, but not experiment 2. Overall, our results suggest auditory distractions, particularly those reliant on speaking, negatively impact pedestrian safety in situations where visual information is minimal. Results may provide guidance for future research and policy about the safety impacts of secondary tasks.  相似文献

A series of experiments was conducted to determine the effects of method of threshold measurement on the amount of threshold shift produced by a masking stimulus. The amount of contralateral tactile masking of the fingertip was found to be much greater when thresholds were measured by the Békésy tracking method than when measured by a forced-choice method. When the Békésy tracking procedure was modified so that each observation interval containing a brief stimulus was followed almost immediately by a second observation interval not containing a stimulus, the amount of masking was substantially reduced for both contralateral tactile masking and auditorytactile masking and corresponded almost exactly with the amount of masking measured by the forced-choice method. No such reduction in the amount of masking was obtained by using this procedure to measure ipsilateral tactile masking or auditory masking.  相似文献

In Experiment 1, a mixed blocking-overshadowing effect of color on an auditory discrimination was demonstrated in goldfish. In Experiment 2 (with lines differing in color and angle), blocking of angle by color and of color by angle was demonstrated in goldfish, In Experiment 3 (again with lines differing in color and angle), overshadowing of angle by color was demonstrated in carp, but the same animals (like goldfish in a previous study) failed to show greater intradimensional than extradimensional transfer. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that blocking and overshadowing are general phenomena of vertebrate learning. They suggest also that the processes responsible for blocking and overshadowing are different from those which produce the dimensional transfer effect.  相似文献

An adaptive procedure for rapid estimation of adult thresholds (PEST: Parameter Estimation by Sequential Testing; Taylor & Creelman, 1967) was modified and applied to the estimation of auditory thresholds in 6-month-old infants (PESTI). This procedure yielded similar absolute thresholds to those obtained in previous research with the method of constant stimuli. Advantages of the present procedure are outlined.  相似文献

It is difficult to maintain stimulus control in animal psychophysical studies using the tracking method. Loss of stimulus control is characterized by wandering thresholds and responses in the absence of the stimulus. Rats were trained to make a variable number of licking responses to turn on an auditory stimulus. A response on a lever in the presence of the stimulus was reinforced with food. Two precedures were added to improve stimulus control. First, lever responses in the absence of the stimulus raised the intensity of the stimulus at the next presentation; second, rate of reinforcement in the threshold region was maintained at about the same level as that in the suprathreshold region by reducing the number of licking responses required to turn on the stimulus. Using these two procedures, stimulus control was improved and maintained and reliable auditory intensity thresholds were obtained.  相似文献

Five experiments on the identifiability of synthetic vowels masked by wideband sounds are reported. In each experiment, identification thresholds (signal/masker ratios, in decibels) were measured for two versions of four vowels: a vibrated version, in which FO varied sinusoidally around 100 Hz; and a steady version, in which F0 was fixed at 100 Hz. The first three experiments were performed on naive subjects. Experiment 1 showed that for maskers consisting of bursts of pink noise, vibrato had no effect on thresholds. In Experiment 2, where the maskers were periodic pulse trains with an F0 randomly varied between 120 and 140 Hz from trial to trial, vibrato slightly improved thresholds when the sound pressure level of the maskers was 40 dB, but had no effect for 65-dB maskers. In Experiment 3, vibrated rather than steady pulse trains were used as maskers; when these maskers were at 40 dB, the vibrated versions of the vowels were slightly less identifiable than their steady versions; but, as in Experiment 2, vibrato had no effect when the maskers were at 65 dB. Experiment 4 showed that the unmasking effect of vibrato found in Experiment 2 disappeared in subjects trained in the identification task. Finally, Experiment 5 indicated that in trained listeners, vibrato had no influence on identification performance even when the maskers and the vowels had synchronous onsets and offsets. We conclude that vibrating a vowel masked by a wideband sound can affect its identification threshold, but only for tonal maskers and in untrained listeners. This effect of vibrato should probably be considered as a Gestalt phenomenon originating from central auditory mechanisms.  相似文献

The perceived locations of paired auditory images, simulating direct sounds and their echoes, have been recently studied in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus; M. L. Dent & R. J. Dooling, 2003a, 2003b). In this article, the authors extend those experiments to include measurements of the precedence effect using a discrimination paradigm in two additional bird species: canaries (Serinus canaria) and zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). Although time courses of summing localization, localization dominance, and echo thresholds were similar across all species, budgerigars had slightly higher overall levels of discrimination. The results from these experiments add further support that the precedence effect in birds is similar to that found in other animals and that the ability to suppress echoes that might degrade localization and auditory object perception may be a general property of the vertebrate auditory system.  相似文献

Speech prosody has traditionally been considered solely in terms of its auditory features, yet correlated visual features exist, such as head and eyebrow movements. This study investigated the extent to which visual prosodic features are able to affect the perception of the auditory features. Participants were presented with videos of a speaker pronouncing two words, with visual features of emphasis on one of these words. For each trial, participants saw one video where the two words were identical in both pitch and amplitude, and another video where there was a difference in either pitch or amplitude that was congruent or incongruent with the visual changes. Participants were asked to decide which video contained the sound difference. Thresholds were obtained for the congruent and incongruent videos, and for an auditory-alone condition. It was found that the congruent thresholds were better than the incongruent thresholds for both pitch and amplitude changes. Interestingly, the congruent thresholds for amplitude were better than for the auditory-alone condition, which implies that the visual features improve sensitivity to loudness changes. These results demonstrate that visual stimuli can affect auditory thresholds for changes in pitch and amplitude, and furthermore support the view that visual prosodic features enhance speech processing.  相似文献
