The threshold stimulus for visual motion discrimination was analyzed into the constituent parameters of velocity, i.e., time and distance, with both of these primary variables subject-determined. It was found that, given a constant stimulus luminance, motion threshold was characterized generally by a “trade-off” or inverse power relationship between time and distance of movement. Earlier reports of energy constancy at threshold (R. H. Brown, 1955, 1957, 1958), implying threshold relationships incompatible with these, were confirmed only for the atypical conditions of high-velocity/low-Iuminance stimuli and were attributed to absolute visibility requirements. Under more general and representative conditions, threshold was relatively insensitive to luminance. The present results were also contrasted with earlier findings (Graham. 1968) of distance or “displacement” constancy at threshold, pertaining to movement between stationary start and stop positions.  相似文献

Can observers be confident about the accuracy of a discrimination response without a visual experience of the stimulus? In a series of five experiments, observers performed a masked orientation discrimination task, a masked shape discrimination task, or a random-dot motion discrimination task, followed by two subjective ratings after each trial, in which participants reported either their visual experience of the stimulus or their confidence in being correct. We observed that the threshold for ratings of the perception of the stimulus was above the threshold for ratings of a decision, that decision ratings outperformed stimulus ratings in predicting trial accuracy, and that different decision-related scales were more strongly associated with other decision-related scales than with ratings of stimulus clarity. We propose a taxonomy of subjective measures of consciousness that differentiates between subjective measures relating to the percept of the stimulus and measures relating to a discrimination decision and discuss the relation to type II blindsight.  相似文献

Thirty-six Brown University students participated in three experiments designed to address perceptual learning. In each experiment, visual discrimination thresholds were tracked over 4,200 trials. Results from Experiment 1 suggest that the pattern of threshold reduction on a single-dot motion-direction discrimination task was stimulus-direction specific and matched (in a velocity-dependent manner) the threshold reduction pattern previously reported for a line-orientation discrimination task. In Experiment 2, it was determined that the stationary-line-orientation—specific practice effects originally reported by Vogels and Orban (1985) could be replicated but were contingent on line length. Similarly, the results from Experiment 3 suggest that practice effects originally reported by Ball and Sekuler (1987) could be replicated but were contingent on stimulus velocity. Implications for the mechanisms underlying direction and orientation discrimination are considered.  相似文献

An experiment concerning the influence of the scale of stimulus values upon the perception of heat-pain is reported in which it is found that the value of the threshold stimulus is dependent upon the size of the steps between successive stimuli.

The results are analysed in the light of a paper by Brown and Cane (1959) in which they point out that the value of a sensory threshold yielded by the Limiting Method is mathematically dependent upon the size of the steps between successive values of the variable stimulus. The threshold values reported here are found to be dependent on the step-size between stimuli to a greater extent than that which would be predicted by Brown and Cane.

In view of these results, an attempt is made to explain the wide variety of pain threshold values reported in the literature.  相似文献

This study examined the multisensory integration of visual and auditory motion information using a methodology designed to single out perceptual integration processes from post-perceptual influences. We assessed the threshold stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) at which the relative directions (same vs. different) of simultaneously presented visual and auditory apparent motion streams could no longer be discriminated (Experiment 1). This threshold was higher than the upper threshold for direction discrimination (left vs. right) of each individual modality when presented in isolation (Experiment 2). The poorer performance observed in bimodal displays was interpreted as a consequence of automatic multisensory integration of motion information. Experiment 3 supported this interpretation by ruling out task differences as the explanation for the higher threshold in Experiment 1. Together these data provide empirical support for the view that multisensory integration of motion signals can occur at a perceptual level.  相似文献

Recent evidence indicates that motion smear can provide useful information for the detection and discrimination of motion. Further, it has been shown that the perception of motion smear depends critically on the density of dots in a random-dot (RD) stimulus. Therefore, in the present experiments, the contribution of perceived motion smear to direction-of-motion discrimination was evaluated using RD targets of different densities. Thresholds for direction-of-motion discrimination and the extent of perceived motion smear were determined for RD stimuli with densities of 1, 2, and 10 dots/deg(2), presented for 200 msec at a velocity of 4, 8, or 12 deg/sec. To evaluate the contribution of information about orientation from motion smear, thresholds for orientation discrimination were measured using parallel lines with the same length as the extent of perceived smear. Despite the opportunity for increased summation as RD density increases, our results indicate that direction-of-motion discrimination worsens. Because perception of motion smear is reduced with an increase in RD density, our results are consistent with a facilitation of direction-of-motion discrimination by visible motion smear.  相似文献

It has been suggested that a visual long-term memory based on a sensory representation of the stimulus accounts for discrimination performance when the reference and the test stimuli are separated in time. Decision processes involved in setting response criteria, however, may also contribute to discrimination performance. In the present study, it is shown that under proper control, spatial frequency discrimination thresholds from a group of observers, each performing on a single trial, are significantly higher for a 2-h than for a 5-sec retention interval, whereas thresholds from individual observers performing in repeated trials with a 2-h retention interval are considerably lower. The results suggest that discrimination performance may depend on the retention of task-relevant information, such as a response criterion, rather than on visual memory of the stimulus. It is concluded that it is risky to postulate ahigh-fidelity long-term visual memory for spatial frequency on the basis of psychophysical group discrimination thresholds.  相似文献

Most previous research on the effect of the duration of preceding discrimination training on responding to a new stimulus has measured the responding during extinction. To reduce effects originating in the extinction procedure itself, the present study assessed the effect of discrimination training on responses to a new negative stimulus added during continued discrimination training. Pigeons were given a new negative stimulus (blue key) after 0, 1, 3, or 9 days of discrimination training with a yellow key as the positive stimulus, and both a green key and a red key as negative. Fewer responses were made to the blue key when it was introduced after nine days of discrimination training than after less discrimination training. That effect of long discrimination training agrees with reported results from extinction tests. However, the effect of briefer discrimination training in the present study differed from reported results with extinction testing. It appears that testing during continued discrimination training eliminates a distortion present in extinction tests of the effect of discrimination training on responding to a new stimulus.  相似文献

A random-walk model of visual discrimination is described and applied to reaction time (RT) distributions from three discrete-trial experiments with pigeons. Experiment 1 was a two-choice hue discrimination task with multiple hues. Choice percentages changed with hue discriminability; RTs were shortest for the least and most discriminable stimuli. Experiments 2 and 3 used go/no-go hue discriminations. Blocks of sessions differed in reward probability associated with a variable red stimulus in Experiment 2 and with a constant green stimulus in Experiment 3. Changes in hue had a large effect on response percentage and a small effect on RT; changes in reward shifted RT distributions on the time axis. The "random-walk, pigeon" model applied to these data is closely related to Ratcliff's diffusion model (Ratcliff, 1978; Ratcliff & Rouder, 1998). Simulations showed that stimulus discriminability affected the speed with which evidence accumulated toward a response threshold, in line with comparable effects in human subjects. Reward probability affected bias, modeled as the amount of evidence needed to reach one threshold rather than the other. The effects of reward probability are novel, and their isolation from stimulus effects within the decision process can guide development of a broader model of discrimination.  相似文献

The thermal diffusivity of an object is a parameter that controls the rate at which heat is extracted from the hand when it touches that object. It is an important feature for distinguishing materials by means of touch. In order to quantitatively describe the ability of human observers to discriminate between materials on the basis of heat extraction rate, we conducted an experiment in which this heat extraction was performed in a controlled way. In different conditions, subjects were repeatedly asked to select from two stimuli the one that cooled faster. The discrimination threshold was around 43% of the extraction rate. A rate that was twice as slow also yielded twice the absolute threshold. When we halved the temperature difference between the beginning and end of the stimulus, the threshold did not change as much. In separate experiments, we investigated the different cues that were available in the stimulus: initial cooling rate and end temperature. Both cues were used for discrimination, but cooling rate seemed to be the most important.  相似文献

In a previous experiment (Howarth and Treisman, 1958) it was shown that when a warning preceded a stimulus by a fixed interval, the threshold level for the stimulus was higher the longer the fixed interval. A model of this effect was proposed, assuming that the threshold criterion adopted by the subject at any moment was modified by his estimate of the probability of a stimulus at that moment.

Three predictions are derived and tested. It is found that: the standard deviation of the response is constant despite the shifts in threshold induced; the threshold continues to fall as the interval from warning to stimulus is decreased to zero, with the lowest threshold when the warning signal and the stimulus are simultaneous; and that a warning signal following the stimulus by an interval of less than 0 5 to 1 sec. also lowers the threshold.  相似文献

Magnitude estimations of the warmth aroused by radiant stimulation of the forehead showed that warmth obeys the psychophysical power law when the’ duration of the stimulus is relatively long (3 or 6 sec). When duration is short (0.25, 0.5. or 1 sec), however, warmth grows as a more complex function of irradiation. The family of psychophysical functions measured for the various durations can be used to generate the rules by which radiant intensity and duration trade to preserve constant warmth. These rules vary systematically from complete temporal summation (i.e., complete reciprocity) near threshold to less and less complete summation as warmth level increases. When, however, the stimulus is expressed as an equivalent change of temperature in the skin, there is no summation, only adaptation. It can be shown that temporal summation observed psychophysically must result from the heat-transfer properties of skin tissue.  相似文献

In some cases, perceptual learning is task-specific. However, task-dependent effects of perceptual learning on psychophysical motion-tuning functions have yet to be clarified. In the present study, subjects performed motion detection or discrimination of the same stimulus over the course of four sessions held on separate days. Subjects who performed motion detection showed the most highly improved performance on the trained motion directions. However, after discrimination training, the highest improvement was not observed at the trained directions but shifted away from them. These results can be explained by lateral inhibition. Task demands may differentially modulate excitatory and inhibitory signals to directions in the vicinity of the trained directions.  相似文献

Previous studies have indicated that the formation of coherent patterns for multielement motion displays depends onglobal cooperative interactions among large ensembles of spatially distributed motion detectors. These interactions enhance certain motion directions and suppress others. It is reported here that perceiving one element moving between two nearby locations likewise is subject to cooperative influences (possibly facilitating and inhibiting interactions within alocal ensemble of overlapping detectors). Thresholds depending on luminance contrast were measured for a generalized singleelement apparent-motion stimulus, and evidence for spontaneous switching and hysteresis effects indicated that motion perception near the 50% threshold was bistable. That is, for conditions in which motion and nonmotion were perceived half the time, the two percepts were distinct; when one was perceived, it clearly was discriminable from the other. These results indicated that (1) single-element apparent-motion thresholds depended on the immediately preceding state of the ensemble of motion detectors responding to the stimulus, and (2) the stimulus activation of individual motion detectors always might be influenced by recurrent, cooperative interactions resulting from the detectors’ being embedded within interconnected ensembles.  相似文献

This paper reports a study of changes in apparent movement to apparent simultaneity thresholds as a function of the directional information of the second point of light. An earlier paper (Jeeves and Bruner, 1956) reported changes in thresholds from apparent movement to apparent successiveness when the same experimental variable was manipulated. In interpreting the results the authors proposed an hypothesis in terms of “attentional disarticulation.” Brown (1956) commenting on this earlier paper put forward an alternative explanation of the results in conventional informational terms and he predicted the changes in the apparent movement to apparent simultaneity thresholds which should occur if studied under the same experimental conditions. He further showed that his predictions would differ from predictions made on the basis of our own explanation. The results of the experiment reported here uphold the predictions of our own earlier theory and fail to fit those made by Brown. However, in attempting to understand the results from the two experiments considered together, it is suggested that a factor must be included which was omitted from our own earlier explanation but emphasized by Brown. This factor as stated by Brown (1956) is “that the threshold for a discrimination tends to increase with the information content of any discrimination which has to be made concurrently.”  相似文献

Two experiments considered the effects of introducing an extreme stimulus (anchor) upon the differential perception of tonal stimuli. In the first experiment, in which Ss rated series stimuli from 1,000 to 2,000 Hz or from 2,000 to 3,000 Hz, the presence of a 750-Hz anchor apparently disrupted discrimination. A second experiment involved testing for a difference threshold (method of limits) in which the standard was a tone of 1,500 Hz. The uncertainty interval (Iu) was larger when the interval between paired stimulus presentations was filled with a 750-Hz tone, again suggesting that discrimination is impaired by the introduction of a low-frequency anchor. Results are discussed in terms of theories relating range extent and discriminability.  相似文献

It has been suggested that judgments about the temporal–spatial order of successive tactile stimuli depend on the perceived direction of apparent motion between them. Here we manipulated tactile apparent-motion percepts by presenting a brief, task-irrelevant auditory stimulus temporally in-between pairs of tactile stimuli. The tactile stimuli were applied one to each hand, with varying stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs). Participants reported the location of the first stimulus (temporal order judgments: TOJs) while adopting both crossed and uncrossed hand postures, so we could scrutinize skin-based, anatomical, and external reference frames. With crossed hands, the sound improved TOJ performance at short (≤300 ms) and at long (>300 ms) SOAs. When the hands were uncrossed, the sound induced a decrease in TOJ performance, but only at short SOAs. A second experiment confirmed that the auditory stimulus indeed modulated tactile apparent motion perception under these conditions. Perceived apparent motion directions were more ambiguous with crossed than with uncrossed hands, probably indicating competing spatial codes in the crossed posture. However, irrespective of posture, the additional sound tended to impair potentially anatomically coded motion direction discrimination at a short SOA of 80 ms, but it significantly enhanced externally coded apparent motion perception at a long SOA of 500 ms. Anatomically coded motion signals imply incorrect TOJ responses with crossed hands, but correct responses when the hands are uncrossed; externally coded motion signals always point toward the correct TOJ response. Thus, taken together, these results suggest that apparent-motion signals are likely taken into account when tactile temporal–spatial information is reconstructed.

Discriminative responses are selected centrally by a statistical decision procedure, limited by the noise level. Noise arises from the irreducible physical variability of light, from spontaneous firing, and from variations in transmission in the afferent paths. The steady state of a simple reaction system has been shown to have some of the properties of a psychophysical discrimination system, including the possibility of deducing a generalized Weber-Fechner Law, both in integral form and in difference form. The Weber ratio so deduced is not constant, and its dependence on stimulus intensity is exhibited. The dependence of the difference limen on the internal threshold is discussed; it is found that in general there is a finite value of this threshold for which response is impossible. This critical threshold is lower for higher values of the reference stimulus intensity. Similarly, it is shown that the difference limen and the Weber ratio, for a fixed value of the threshold, become infinite (i.e., discrimination is impossible) for a value of the stimulus intensity which in general is finite.  相似文献
