This paper describes a PDP-15 timesharing system in which on-line experimentation and an undergraduate laboratory course co-exist with many other users. Design features include precise stimulus and response timing, easy experiment programming, easy system access, and 15 or more simultaneous users. A laboratory configuration is described in which two compatible minicomputers are used to collect psychophyiological data and to generate a complex visual display. The two computers are part of independent systems used by different research groups for psychophysiological experimentation and cognitive reaction time research. With minimal additional requirements, however, it is possible to link the function of the two machines and greatly expand experimental possibilities. Two real-time applications are discussed, as well as other advantages of having compatible processors, such as simplified program development.  相似文献

This article describes a solid state apparatus for use in 2 by 2 game research. There are two individual player’s boards and a control panel for E. Following E’s signal, each player chooses one of two responses. Their choices are immediately registered on E’s panel, but appear on each individual game board only after both have responded. A system for the on-line graphic quantification of alpha frequencies (or other frequency bands extracted from EEG signals) is described. Alpha-frequency components (8 to 13 Hz) are actively filtered from complex EEG waveforms and presented to a laboratory-developed solid state integrator. The high-level output of the integrator, which is compatible with all popular EEG and polygraph recorders, is in the form of an ascending analog voltage ramp, reset at a predetermined level, to provide a rapid quantitative determination of alpha activity and variability. The design of the integrator permits an alternate mode of operation where time-synchronized resets, in lieu of voltage-dependent resets, produce variable height voltage ramps, whose amplitude is a direct function of the accumulated alpha activity per unit time. This method of preprocessing and signal conditioning the alpha components of the EEG waveform provides a simple analog registry of on-line real-time correlation of alpha activity with various physiological and behavioral activity.  相似文献

PROCTOR, an on-line interactive system for student evaluation and monitoring in courses employing the PSI format, is described. This system involves a tester module that assumes many of the routine managerial duties traditionally assigned to the student proctor, such as quiz administration and scoring, performance feedback, and complete record keeping. Also, PROCTOR includes a multipurpose editor that allows an instructor to enter, examine, or modify any information in the disk files accessed by the tester. Factors related to the implementation and use of this system are considered, and its advantages for management, quality control, and staffing in PSI courses are discussed.  相似文献

This paper examines several areas in the use of laboratory computers in psychobiology, specifically how they are being used, the problems in languages and software, in interfacing computers to experimental configurations, and in the hardware involved. The paper defines the experimental tasks and data requirements which tend to distinguish computer usage in physiological research from other areas of psychology and the tasks which absolutely necessitate the use of a computer and in what mode. Finally we present our views of the dangers of computer use and misuse and make our own subjective evaluation of how well computers are living up to their end of the bargain, how well scientists are doing at their end, and where we should go from here.  相似文献

This paper describes an automated eye movement laboratory that uses electrooculography (EOG) to study people’s eye movements while they read. An on-line minicomputer processes bioelectric potentials that correspond to saccadic eye movements. Horizontal saccades larger than 1.5 deg of visual angle are detected and analyzed in real-time as they occur. The laboratory is designed for prolonged yet unobtrusive observation of human eye movements during sustained reading periods of minutes or hours. All important functions regarding data collection and data reduction are performed automatically, according to simple procedures that can be applied uniformly and without bias to nearly all subjects that we study. Results from three experiments are cited in order to quantify the performance of the laboratory with respect to four criteria: saccade detection accuracy, measurement accuracy, sensitivity, and the uniformity of these measures over different subjects.  相似文献

To investigate the effects of effort toward comprehension on subsequent recall, Auble, Franks, and Soraci (1979) generated a series of 40 sentences which varied in comprehensibility. We presented these sentences along with 60 new sentences to 122 undergraduates at the University of New Orleans. Sentences were rated for comprehensibility both before and after cue presentation. Sentences which appear most useful for research are discussed.  相似文献

The design of a computer-based laboratory system requires the coordination of pedagogical and technical goals. The development of our on-line laboratory in cognition and perception is described. The laboratory consists of 11 on-line experiments in which the student participates as both experimenter and subject. The software was designed for maximum transportability: Programs were written in a low-level BASIC, with thorough documentation; flexibility is provided both within and across experiments to suit local constraints; and the experiments are supported by a student manual, instructor’s manual, and implementation notes. Criteria for selecting experiments, implementation of the experiments, and preliminary evaluation of the laboratory are discussed.  相似文献

Three components of a teaching laboratory in perception are described that (1) compare several psychophysical methods for measuring visual illusions, (2) simulate experiments on dark adaptation, and (3) allow participation in auditory demonstrations or experiments. A two-part system for digital measurement of such diverse response parameters as latency, pulse width, amplitude, and events per unit time is described. The mainframe consists of counters with light-emitting diode (LED) numeric readouts and a quartz crystal controlled internal time base. It also contains all power supply requirements for both the mainframe electronics and the second part of the system, the plug-ins. Each plug-in is designed to use the main unit counters, timers, readouts, and power supplies to measure the desired parameter. Thus, each numeric readout channel of the mainframe may be used to measure various parameters simply by changing the plug-in attached to it. The unit has proved to be very useful in reducing experimenter error in measuring response parameters in classical nictitating membrane conditioning.  相似文献
