Six men and six women were timed as they made judgments about a word whose line of letters and individual letters were separately turned in different angular orientations. The subjects were asked to indicate by manual key-pressing responses whether the letters in the word were normal letters or reflected, mirror-image letters. Analysis showed that (1) reaction time (RT) was slower for reflected letters than for normal letters, and for subjects using the left (nondominant) hand rather than the right (dominant) hand for responding to normal letters. (2) RT generally increased in relation to the deviation of the individual letters from normal upright orientation but increased more reliably for normal than for reflected letters. (3) Although there were exceptions, RT for words composed of normal letters generally increased in relation to the deviation of the individual letters from normal upright, regardless of the orientation of the line of letters.  相似文献

The hypothesis that perception enslaves action is examined by assessing whether systematic distortions in perceptual judgments are reflected by inaccuracies in catching. In the first experiment, participants had to align manually the orientation of a reference bar placed at different distances in the frontoparallel plane. In the second experiment participants had to catch differently orientated moving bars, which became invisible at different distances from the interception point. In the matching experiment, systematic errors in the alignment of orientation were found in particular for oblique orientations, the magnitude of which increased with increasing distance of the reference bar. The inaccuracies in the final hand orientation during the catching task, however, did not mirror this pattern of deviations. The findings are interpreted to be more consistent with recent views that vision for perception (i.e., matching) and vision for action (i.e., catching) are dissociated than with the view that perception enslaves action.  相似文献

Summary The kinematics of leftward and rightward movements are different. The question is raised whether these differences in both arms are best accounted for in terms of the flexion-extension dimension or the leftward-rightward dimension. In a simple step-tracking experiment the acceleration-time curves of fast flexions and extensions of the left and of the right elbow joint in a horizontal plane were recorded. The durations of individual segments of the acceleration curves are best predicted by spatial direction: that is, the differences between leftward and rightward movements are either both positive or both negative in both arms. This holds only for the first part of the movement until maximum deceleration is reached. From then on the timing is best predicted by the flexion-extension dimension. This is taken as evidence for a two-process theory of motor control according to which a central process is first in command and a lower-level, muscle-related process then takes over. Although a change which corresponds to the one observed in the time variables is not seen in the maxima of the acceleration curves, this seeming disparity can be reconciled with a two-process theory.  相似文献

Recent behavioral and computational research on eye movement control during scene viewing has focused on where the eyes move. However, fixations also differ in their durations, and when the eyes move may be another important indicator of perceptual and cognitive activity. Here we used a scene onset delay paradigm to investigate the degree to which individual fixation durations are under direct moment-to-moment control of the viewer’s current visual scene. During saccades just prior to critical fixations, the scene was removed from view so that when the eyes landed, no scene was present. Following a manipulated delay period, the scene was restored to view. We found that one population of fixations was under the direct control of the current scene, increasing in duration as delay increased. A second population of fixations was relatively constant across delay. The pattern of data did not change whether delay duration was random or blocked, suggesting that the effects were not under the strategic control of the viewer. The results support a mixed control model in which the durations of some fixations proceed regardless of scene presence, whereas others are under the direct moment-to-moment control of ongoing scene analysis.  相似文献

Recent work on orientation perception and memory in infants suggest that oblique stimulus orientations are treated as members of a category. The two studies in this report support this hypothesis and extend previous findings by demonstrating that this category includes obliques on either side of vertical even when infants are previously exposed to obliques on only one side.  相似文献

In the present study, we investigated the influence of cognitive factors on eye-movement behaviors in reading. Participants performed two tasks: a normal-reading task, as well as a mindless-reading task in which letters were replaced with unreadable block shapes. This mindless-reading task served as an oculomotor control condition, simulating the visual aspects of reading but removing higher-level linguistic processing. Fixation durations, word skipping, and some regressions were influenced by cognitive factors, whereas eye movements within words appeared to be less open to cognitive control. Implications for models of eye-movement control in reading are discussed.  相似文献

Numerous studies have demonstrated effects of word frequency on eye movements during reading, but the precise timing of this influence has remained unclear. The fast priming paradigm was previously used to study influences of related versus unrelated primes on the target word. Here, we use this procedure to investigate whether the frequency of the prime word has a direct influence on eye movements during reading when the prime–target relation is not manipulated. We found that with average prime intervals of 32 ms readers made longer single fixation durations on the target word in the low than in the high frequency prime condition. Distributional analyses demonstrated that the effect of prime frequency on single fixation durations occurred very early, supporting theories of immediate cognitive control of eye movements. Finding prime frequency effects only 207 ms after visibility of the prime and for prime durations of 32 ms yields new time constraints for cognitive processes controlling eye movements during reading. Our variant of the fast priming paradigm provides a new approach to test early influences of word processing on eye movement control during reading.  相似文献

通过两个眼动实验考察金钱奖励和惩罚引起的动机对个体在不同空间线索条件下注意控制加工的影响。实验1采用朝向/反向眼跳范式, 被试通过内源性线索提供心理准备的情况下做出简单的朝向眼跳以及需要抑制优势反应的反向眼跳。结果发现, 相比无奖惩条件, 奖励条件下朝向眼跳任务的正确率更高, 惩罚条件下反向眼跳任务的正确率更高; 两种眼跳任务中有奖惩条件下的眼跳峰速度均比无奖惩条件高。实验2采用Go/No-go任务, 进一步探讨了由副中央凹加工外源性边缘线索从而不能提供充分心理准备的情况下奖励和惩罚对注意控制的影响。结果发现, 奖励条件下Go反应的眼跳潜伏期更短, 惩罚条件下No-go反应正确率更高, 眼跳峰速度在两种条件下均比无奖惩条件高。以上结果表明, 奖励和惩罚均能够促进个体的注意控制, 但二者的加工过程是分离的, 奖励能够改善趋近行为, 惩罚则能够显著促进抑制控制行为, 且奖励和惩罚在注意控制加工过程中具有不同的作用模式, 奖励能够更早唤醒注意控制系统从而更快地促进行为的发生与执行, 惩罚则能够通过调节注意资源促进以目标为导向的行为中对优势反应的抑制。  相似文献

The cult controversy has now spanned two decades. New religious movements clearly have engendered considerable opposition, but there is relatively little information concerning the impact of the cult controversy on public opinion. This article reports on the results of a national survey of both the general public and institutional elites. Support for four specific forms of social control was assessed. The results indicate considerable support for controls among the general population but lower levels of support among institutional elites. The least support is observed for blocking publication of the Unification Church sponsored Washington Times and the greatest support is registered for prohibiting proselytization of teenagers by all new religious groups. The findings are helpful in interpreting the outcome of the cult controversy to date and suggest that the potential for redrawing church-state boundaries remains.  相似文献

It is known that young adults (YA) circumvent pedestrians differently than inanimate obstacles and that limb movements of the pedestrian influence minimum clearance for predictable pedestrian paths. Although older adults (OA) use more cautious strategies for general pedestrian avoidance compared to YA, how pedestrian movements influence circumvention by OAs is unknown. The aim of this study was to understand how limb movements of a pedestrian with an initially unpredictable trajectory affect circumvention control in younger vs older healthy adults. Fourteen YA and 14 OA (> 70 years) were immersed in a virtual shopping mall and instructed to circumvent a virtual pedestrian (VP) approaching with either normal locomotor movements, upper limbs fixed, lower limbs fixed, or both upper and lower limbs fixed. Onset distance for trajectory deviation, minimum clearance, walking speed, body segment yaw angles and gaze behaviour were analysed. When the VP lacked local limb movements, both age groups initiated their trajectory deviations farther away, but significantly more so for OA. Minimal clearance was unchanged across conditions and similar for both age groups. OA walked slower, produced smaller head and trunk yaw, and visually focused on the VP for a greater percentage of time. Thus, lack of limb movements of another pedestrian resulted in more cautious circumvention control and OA needed more time to process visual information with greater visual attention focused on the VP. Age-related changes could translate to a greater risk of falls in OA populations with reduced balance and mobility that could limit community ambulation.  相似文献

Much remains to be learned about how agonist and antagonist muscles are controlled during the production of rapid, voluntary movements. In an effort to summarize a wide body of existing knowledge and stimulate future research on this subject, an impulse-timing theory is presented which attempts to predict the activity of reciprocal muscles based on certain characteristics of a movement. The basic tenet of the theory is that variables of movement time, movement distance and inertial load have fairly predictable effects on the underlying muscular activity of the agonist and antagonist muscles during the production of rapid and discrete, voluntary movements. The theory is derived from the kinematic work of Schmidt, Zelaznik, Hawkins, Frank and Quinn (1979) and supporting evidence from studies which have used electromyographic (EMG) recordings of agonist and antagonist muscles during rapid movements. Issues related to synergistic muscle control, central and peripheral control of reciprocal muscle activity, muscle control, and neurological disorder and the relationship between impulse-timing and mass-spring control are discussed in the final section.  相似文献

It is well established that rote rehearsal plays a key role in serial memory for lists of verbal items. Although a great deal of research has informed us about the nature of verbal rehearsal, much less attention has been devoted to rehearsal in serial memory for visual-spatial information. By using the dot task—a visual-spatial analogue of the classical verbal serial recall task—with delayed recall, performance and eyetracking data were recorded in order to establish whether visual-spatial rehearsal could be evidenced by eye movement. The use of eye movement as a form of rehearsal is detectable (Experiment 1), and it seems to contribute to serial memory performance over and above rehearsal based on shifts of spatial attention (Experiments 1 and 2).  相似文献

Structural constraints affect the coordination of bimanual movements in ways that have been taken to suggest that the specification of different movement amplitudes is subject to strong intermanual interference effects. Most experiments taken to support this notion, however, confounded variations of movement amplitudes with symmetry in starting locations and variations in target location. The present experiment was designed to further investigate the relative influence of the parameters starting location, movement amplitude, and target location on bimanual movement coordination. Participants performed simultaneous reaching movements with the left and right hand from same and different starting locations to same and different target locations. On each trial, two movements could match on none, one, or all of the parameters. We assessed the influence of each parameter by comparing conditions in which only a single parameter matched between the two hands with conditions in which all parameters differed. The reaction-time data revealed some challenging results for previous studies: (1) same starting locations significantly delayed movement initiation; (2) specifying movement amplitudes had virtually no effect on movement initiation, whereas (3) selecting same target locations significantly benefited the bimanual responses. These findings cannot be taken to support the notion that amplitude specification affects the initiation of bimanual movements. Rather, they support the notion that the initial starting locations of the two hands and the selection of target locations decide about the ease with which we perform bimanual reaching movements.  相似文献

Summary Analyses of alphabetic confusion matrices have produced feature lists defined in terms of confusability of characters thought to contain them. Identical shapes of low confusability (e.g., b, d, p, q) therefore share few or no features. Several researchers have observed mutual inhibition of feature extraction with simultaneously presented confusable shapes. Mutual inhibition observed in the current experiments provides a basis for a definition of features in terms of orientation-independent structural relationships. In the first experiment, four alphanumeric characters were each confused with one other character in this same set; however, when another set was formed by reorienting some of these same shapes to become different characters (e.g., 6 to 9), these confusions disappeared. In the second experiment, characters within each set were exposed parafoveally in pairs to different groups of subjects. If members of a pair were similar in shape (disregarding orientation), identification accuracy was poorer than if they were not. Similar shapes in the same orientation were not signficantly more mutually inhibiting than similar shapes in different orientations.  相似文献

Rats' responding was stabilized for over 35 days on 4-min variable-interval reinforcement. Reinforcements per hour for 4-sec wide classes of interresponse times were then separately controlled by adjusting those for each class to the variable-interval values that had just prevailed. This produced little or no change in interresponse times, indicating that the new procedure was substantially equivalent to a variable-interval schedule. The variable-interval schedule produced a high and stable conditional probability of interresponse times in the 0- to 4-sec class, associated with a peak in reinforcements per hour for this class. Reducing the reinforcements per hour for this class while raising that for another class (by 3.3 reinforcements per hour) significantly reduced the conditional probability of 0- to 4-sec interresponse times. Restoring the 3.3 reinforcements per hour to the 0- to 4-sec class significantly elevated the conditional probability of interresponse times in this class. In this paper we review existing research on cerebral specialization in Down's syndrome (DS) individuals, and we present a preliminary model. The model proposes that the cerebral organization of DS persons is such that there is a dissociation of brain areas responsible for speech perception and the production of complex movement including speech. The authors investigated (a). whether the specificity of practice hypothesis is mediated by the importance of visual afferent information for the control of manual aiming movements and (b). how movement planning and online correction processes to the movement initial impulse are affected by the withdrawal of visual information in transfer. In acquisition, participants (N = 40) aimed at targets of different sizes in a full-vision or in a target-only condition before being transferred to a target-only condition without knowledge of results. The results supported the hypothesis that learning is specific to the source or sources of afferent information that are more likely to ensure optimal performance. The results also suggested that individuals will not always use visual afferent information more extensively when aiming at a small rather than at a large target. Instead, in a temporally constrained task, the relative efficiency of visually based corrections appears to mediate how exclusively an individual will rely on online visual afferent information for movement control. Finally, the detailed kinematic analysis performed in the present study clearly indicated that online modifications to the movement primary impulse are possible, arguing for a continuous or pseudo-continuous control of relatively slow aiming movements on the basis of visual afferent input.  相似文献

扩展论元依存模型认为:语序固定语言的题元角色指派依赖论元的语序线索; 论元线索与动词论元表征不一致时, 题元角色再分析会产生额外的加工负荷。为检验该模型, 本研究采用眼动记录方法, 实验为2 (句子结构:居中、前置) × 2 (控制动词类型:主语控制、宾语控制)被试内设计。通过操纵句子结构, 考察汉语读者对语序线索的依赖性; 通过操纵控制动词类型, 考察汉语论元线索与动词论元表征的一致性对题元角色指派的影响。结果发现:(1)前置结构的句子在名词1、名词2和动词区域的阅读时间和回视次数多于居中结构的句子; (2)宾语控制动词条件在动词和动词后区域的第二遍阅读时间和总回视次数多于主语控制动词条件; (3)在居中结构中, 宾语控制动词条件在名词2和动词区域的阅读时间和回视次数多于主语控制动词条件; 在前置结构中, 宾语控制动词条件在动词后区域的阅读时间多于主语控制动词条件。结果支持扩展论元依存模型。  相似文献
