Social control doctrines of mental illness and the medical profession in nineteenth-century America

Social control doctrines of mental disorders have influenced a generation of psychologists and have shaped attitudes and discussions about how to treat the mentally ill. In light of the failure of deinstitutionalization as a public policy and the contemporary concern with the medical or biological bases of psychiatric disorders, this paper re-examines social control doctrines. Reviewing mid-nineteenth century statistical accounts, the author challenges claims of social control theorists and shows that in recent years some former social control advocates and revisionists have “recanted” and criticized their earlier use of the concept of social control, particularly the characterization of the asylum as a “total institution”.     

Jews and mental illness: medical metaphors, anti-semitism, and the Jewish response

The idea that Jews were prone to a specific set of illnesses is as old as the Middle Ages. In the nineteenth century the view that the Jew was especially prone to developing mental illnesses became an accepted part of medical discourse. Jewish doctors, too, believed this and had to evolve a means of dealing with their own potential madness.     

Rural mental health in America

Mental health services are in short supply in rural America. This article describes both the mental health service needs in rural areas and the barriers to improving the availability, accessibility, and acceptability of rural mental health services. Federal programs in rural mental health care in the Departments of Health and Human Services, Agriculture, and Education are described, as well as selected congressional initiatives. The role of the federal Office of Rural Health Policy is emphasized, and policy recommendations for improving rural mental health care delivery are presented.
