A sample of adult Ss of reasonably normal intelligence were given an ‘IQ’ test, a series of RT tests using 0, 1, 2, 3 bits of information in a Hick paradigm and an RT task requiring choice of 1 of 3 lights as an ‘odd-man-out’ on the basis of its relative position. Negative correlations were found between both RT and measures of variation in RT and ‘IQ’ for both of the two tasks. Recent results showing no correlation between Hick slope and ‘IQ’ and no increase in correlation between ‘IQ’ and RT with increasing number of bits, are confirmed. An explanation for findings of Ss whose RT data do not conform to Hick's law is tested and found inadequate. The ‘odd-man-out’ task is found to show an effect of ‘learning’ across the period of the task, the size of the learning effect was found also to correlate with ‘IQ’, but no evidence for learning was found with the choice RT task.  相似文献

Longstreth's (1984) critique of Jensen's research on the relationship of IQ to individual differences in visual reaction time (RT), measured in the Hick paradigm, is found to have numerous errors of fact and interpretation, some trivial and some of theoretical importance. Longstreth's narrowly focused and conjectural style of criticism, which peculiarly strains to favor the null hypothesis, unfortunately obscures the essential findings of Jensen's (and others') studies of the RT-IQ relationship. The two main negative verdicts of Longstreth's critique concerning the RT-IQ relationship are refuted by meta-analyses of presently available data. First, not only do individual differences in RT show a significant negative correlation with IQ, but individual differences in the slope of the regression of RT on stimulus set size scaled in bits (i.e., the binary logarithm of the number of potential reaction stimuli) also show a fully significant, albeit low, negative correlation with IQ. Contrary to Longstreth's second negative surmise, meta-analysis also shows that the magnitude of the RT-IQ correlation itself is a linearly increasing (negative) function of stimulus set-size scaled in bits.  相似文献

Mental chronometry (MC) studies cognitive processes measured by time. It provides an absolute, ratio scale. The limitations of instrumentation and statistical analysis caused the early studies in MC to be eclipsed by the ‘paper-and-pencil’ psychometric tests started by Binet. However, they use an age-normed, rather than a ratio scale, which severely limits the ability of IQ tests to probe the physical basis of differences in cognition. For this reason, Arthur Jensen reinitiated mental chronometry in the 1970s. He designed an apparatus that measures reaction time to a task known as the Hick paradigm that requires the testee to respond to a display of 1 to 8 lights. Faster decision times were related to psychometric g, with theoretically important consequences. He was able to do this, where many other studies had failed, mainly because his apparatus clearly separated movement (MT) from reaction time (RT, also called ‘decision time’.) Interestingly, while RT is clearly related to IQ, MT is not. Principal components analysis reveals RT to be a cognitive variable and MT a motor variable. Failure to distinguish between them drastically obscures the correlation between composite RT (i.e., RT + MT) and cognitive variables. When Jensen (2006) reviewed the literature on MC he found there was a shocking lack of standardization in the administration, recording, and analysis. Consequently, the results of a study conducted in one lab, even though measured in absolute time, could not be compared directly against those from another. Termed “method variance,” this is a major obstacle to the advancement of MC. For that reason, Jensen's Institute of Mental Chronometry commissioned a leading electronics firm to construct a state-of-the-art apparatus to administer, record, and analyze MC experiments.  相似文献

In a previous study, the cumulative effect of recurrent severe hypoglycemia on cognitive function was examined in 100 patients with insulin-treated diabetes and a significant correlation was observed between the frequency of severe hypoglycemic episodes and the difference between their current IQ and estimated premorbid IQ (Langan, Deary, Hepburn, & Frier, 1991). The study here extended this model for examination of the role of biological environmental influences on intelligence. Eighty-five of the original cohort of 100 patients were recalled and tested on Wechsler Performance IQ, a test of premorbid IQ, the Hick Reaction Time task, the Sternberg Memory Scan task and a test of Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVIP). The patients' frequency of severe hypoglycemia was assessed using a structured interview. Both IQ-decrement estimates and frequencies of severe hypoglycemia proved reliable after 18 months (correlations > .75) and the corrected correlation between these two variables was about .4. Therefore, repeated episodes of acute severe neuroglycopenia are associated with a lowering of IQ. Frequency of severe hypoglycemia was significantly related to Hick decision times and to response thresholds in the RVIP task. Factor analysis suggested that hypoglycemia affects decision or response-initiation processes rather than encoding, storage, comparison, or classification processes in short-term memory. Indices of these short-term memory processes were highly related to IQ-type test scores. This study also confirms, in a sample with a near-normal distribution of IQ, that measures of psychometric intelligence are significantly correlated with indices from elementary cognitive tests, especially RVIP task, which is based on signal-detection theory.  相似文献

Three experiments investigated the relation between visual scanning demands, reaction time (RT), and psychometrically defined intelligence (IQ). Prior studies have shown reliable correlations between RT and IQ in the range of −.20 to −.80. However, these studies have confounded the number of possible stimuli (stimulus uncertainty) with the size of the area in which the stimuli may appear (visual angle). Experiment 1 replicated these studies retaining this confound. As the number of stimuli increased from one to eight, the visual angle was permitted to increase as well (from 0° to 30°). The results showed that RT varied in accord with Hick's (1952) law, and a median correlation between IQ and six RT parameters (subjects' mean RTs and standard deviations at three levels of stimulus uncertainty) of −.47 was observed. Experiment 2 removed the confound, varying only stimulus uncertainty, and the median IQ-RT correlation declined to −.02. Experiment 3 held stimulus uncertainty constant at 1 bit (two stimuli) and varied visual angle; a median correlation of −.19 was observed. It was concluded that many of the previously reported correlations may not have hinged on speed of information processing alone, but at least in part on subjects' abilities to scan the display across which the stimuli appeared.  相似文献

The relationship between psychometric intelligence and reaction times (RTs) in three well-known elementary cognitive tasks (Hick simple and choice reaction time task, Sternberg's short-term memory scanning, Posner's letter matching) was studied in a sample of 116 participants. In conformity with other studies mean RTs and intraindividual variabilities (SDs) of RT were correlated significantly with Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM). On the basis of the mental speed theory the processing measures or component scores (like slopes in the Hick and Sternberg paradigm and the NI-PI measure in the Posner task) should give the most substantial relationships with intelligence. However, as in other previous studies these measures displayed rather low, albeit significant, relationships with intelligence, which was probably due to the low reliability of these parameters. For the Posner paradigm, we proposed alternative approaches to compute an indicator for long-term memory (LTM) access that gave substantial correlations with intelligence. We conclude that LTM access is significantly associated with psychometric intelligence, whereas up to now there has been no unequivocal evidence for a substantial relationship between short-term memory access in the Sternberg task and intelligence.  相似文献

The limited capacity theory assumes that working memory (WM) has limited capacity to process information and, at the same time, to store other pieces of information, necessary for further processing. Quick processing of data is supposed to be the only way to solve the task without the risk of losing vital pieces of information. We predicted, then, that the correlation between mental speed, measured by reaction time (RT), and the intelligence quotient (IQ) should not appear in the case of persons who possess a relatively capacious WM store, or who show increased retention capability of their WM store. Such persons do not need to be fast, whereas, for people who show poorer indices of capacity or retention capability of WM, mental speed is the only way to tackle a complex and difficult intellectual task. As predicted, the RT/IQ correlation appeared much stronger in the group of subjects characterized by lower retention capability and capacity of WM.  相似文献

The relationship between inspection time (IT) and intelligence id discussed in the context of the more general relationship between measures of mental speed and mental ability. Six issues are raised concerning IT, mental speed and intelligence: the size of the sample that have been studied; the inclusion of mentally-retarded Ss in these samples; the generality of IT; reaction time (RT) correlations with intelligence; IT and timed vs untimed IQ tests; and theoritical implications of the IT/IQ relationship. In the latter section, it is concluded that IT does not fit neatly into models accounting for RT/IQ correlates and that additional research will be required to obtain a better understanding of the nature of its relationship with intelligence.  相似文献

One hundred and thirteen high school students were randomly assigned to one of two groups that were administered an intelligence test (the Multidimensional Aptitude Battery) under either timed or untimed conditions. Subsequently, all subjects were given a battery of 8 reaction time tests. Multiple regression analyses showed that combinations of RTs were approximately equally good predictors of IQ scores in both groups. Zero-order correlations between each RT test and IQ scores were also approximately equal for timed and untimed Verbal and Full-Scale scores but correlations with Performance scores were higher in the timed condition. The extent to which the different RT tests correlated with timed scores was quite highly related to the tests' loadings on a general speed factor but these loadings were not related to the tests' correlations with untimed scores. Rather, the relative complexity of the RT tests had a stronger influence on their correlations with IQ scores in the untimed condition. It is concluded that timed and untimed intelligence tests impose different information-processing demands on subjects but that the speed with which subjects can cope with these demands is equally important in both conditions.  相似文献

The subjects, 120 college students, sorted cards for 42 sec with instructions to process 0, 1, or 2 bits of information per card (response uncertainty) and then were asked to make an absolute judgement of the interval's duration. Half of the subjects knew this judgement would be required before the interval (prospective paradigm); half did not (retrospective paradigm). Judged time was an inverse linear function of response uncertainty under the prospective paradigm, whereas no significant function was obtained under the retrospective paradigm.  相似文献

Jensen has reported a series of reaction-time studies which lead him to conclude that various parameters correlate significantly with IQ. Certain of these parameters are especially emphasized because of their theoretical background and the resulting theoretical light they shed upon the nature of intelligence. Two of the lime-lighted parameters are slope of RT across set size and increasing correlations of RT with IQ as set size increases. I review these studies in detail. I conclude that Jensen's claims are unwarranted. There are many difficulties in his approach that cover the entire gamut from method to data to theory. Some original reseach of my own is reported to illustrate the methodological problems with Jensen's procedure. The data that he alludes to often do not support his claims. The theory that he applies does not fit his paradigm. My conclusion: such research is not easy.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test the relationship between IQ and physical aggression in a nonclinical-nonforensic male sample in a laboratory setting. Thirty males completed an abbreviated version of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale—Revised. Aggression was measured using a modified version of the Taylor reaction-time (RT) aggression paradigm in which subjects competed on a RT task and both received and delivered shocks to a fictitious opponent in provoking and nonprovoking conditions. Provocation conditions (High and Low) were defined by the intensity of shocks the subjects received. Results demonstrated strong inverse correlations between IQ and aggressive behavior under both High and Low Provocation conditions.  相似文献

A reaction time (RT) paradigm was developed to study retrieval processes in paired associate (PA) recall. Prior to the experimental session, subjects learned lists of PAs (varying in length from three to 24 pairs); during the experimental session, subjects' RT to say the response word from the onset of a visually presented stimulus word was measured. The implications of several classes of retrieval models were discussed in the context of this paradigm. The shape of the RT-list length function, practice, and sequential effects were all of interest in distinguishing among models. Four experiments were reported which were designed to (1) establish the baseline effects in this paradigm, (2) determine which of these effects should be attributed to the retrieval stage of processing, and (3) investigate the effect of semantic memory in this task. Results suggest that simple serial scanning models are inadequate to handle the data from this task. Strength, direct-access, or parallel processing models, on the other hand, seem to capture the qualitative effects present in our experiments. When a strength model was formalized and fit to the data from Experiment I, it was found that a two-trace version gave good quantitative fits while a one-trace version did not, suggesting that both short- and long-term memory independently contribute in this task.  相似文献

Two independent data sets were selected to examine the interrelations among reaction time (RT), between-subject variability or diversity (SD), and age. In both data sets, a strong correlation between RT and SD was obtained. This strong correlation was not affected when age was controlled in a partial correlation analysis. On the other hand, a weaker but significant correlation was obtained between age and SD. This correlation was eliminated when RT was controlled in a partial correlation analysis. Our analyses of the two data sets also indicated that the relation between RT and SD is identical for both young and elderly groups. Thus, the greater diversity often observed in performances of older groups is a direct consequence of slowing, rather than an independent effect of advancing age.  相似文献

The model of a single central bottleneck for human information processing is critically examined. Most evidence cited in support of the model has been observed within the overlapping tasks paradigm. It is shown here that most findings obtained within that paradigm and that were used to support the model are also consistent with a simple resource model. The most prominent findings are the millisecond-for-millisecond slope at the left of the RT2-SOA curve, the high RT1-RT2 correlation, the additivity of the effects on RT2 of SOA and of the difficulty of selecting R2, and the washout of the effect of S2 discriminability on RT2 in a dual-task condition. In addition, the asymmetry of the effects of the dual-task requirement on RT1 and RT2 can be accounted for by the resource model provided that it assumes uneven allocation of resources, which is quite reasonable in view of the task asymmetry inherent in the demand characteristics of the paradigm. The same is true for two other findings that appear to support the single-bottleneck model-that in the dual-task condition, the demand of the first task affects equally RT1 and RT2 and that its effect on RT1 is the same as the corresponding effect in the single-task condition. Furthermore, the single-bottleneck model is hard to reconcile with a negative slope at the left of the RT1-SOA curve or a positive slope at the left of the IRI-SOA curve, unless augmented by ancillary assumptions that are yet to be substantiated. Representative data were fit by each of the models using its optimal set of parameters. Both models achieved quite good degrees of fit. It is further argued that since the overlapping tasks paradigm is heavily biased in favor of a speedy reaction to the stimulus that appears first, it is nonoptimal for testing the central bottleneck model. Finally, the bottleneck model is examined in terms of other scientific criteria.  相似文献

Adherents of the Galton paradigm favour the concept that the simple parameter ‘speed of information processing’ has a physiological basis and determines complex achievements assessed in intelligence tests as well as social success. These assumptions are supported by inter-individual correlations. Further supporting evidence comes from total measurement where not only the information content of the stimuli is measured, but also the time to process them. This reveals an individually constant period during which 1 bit of information is processed. It is called the ‘basic period of information processing’ (BIP), which lasts 1/15 s (= 67 ms) in average adults (IQ 100) and is constant over the ranges from which target stimuli can be drawn and over varying modes of the signs (letters, numbers, musical notes, etc.). In representative samples of adults duration of BIP correlates with global IQ (r ? ?0.60): We conclude that the BIP of an adult with an IQ of 122 is 50 ms and with an IQ of 78 twice as long (100 ms). We consider BIP to be a physiological and general determinant of intelligence, being measurable at a ratio or even an absolute scale level. Thus, it appears to be suitable as a building unit for reconstructing the rather fuzzy traditional concept of general intelligence.  相似文献

The programming processes concerned with response duration were studied in a precueing and in a priming reaction time (RT) paradigm. Participants had to produce a motor response of a specified duration as soon as possible after a response signal (RS) preceded by a warning signal (WS), which could deliver information on 2 response parameters (duration and effector). In Experiment I (precueing; N = 12), 3 effectors (the right hand, the left hand, or the knees) and 3 durations (.7, 2.5, or 5.5 s) were contrasted. Two responses differing in their biomechanical features were required in 2 blocks of trials: Subjects had to accurately time the duration of either a sustained button press or an interval between 2 brief presses. The RT patterns revealed a short-long effect: Shorter RTs were produced before the short duration than before the longer, provided that the duration was not precued. This short-long effect occurred whatever type of response and effector were involved. Two conclusions were reached. First, response duration was included in the motor program elaborated before execution, whatever the biomechanical features of the response; and, second, the program for the short duration was activated on all trials and was used as a basis for programming longer durations when needed. These conclusions were tested in Experiment 2 (priming; N = 12), in which a small proportion of invalid trials concerning duration was provided. Thus, the duration required by the RS differed from that primed by the WS. Two durations (.7 or 2.5 s) and 2 effectors (the index or the middle finger) were involved. In the invalid trials, the responses of short and long durations did not yield any RT differences, thus confirming the particular status of the short duration. This suggests that deprogramming operations (which lengthen the RT) are needed after a RS to produce short response durations but not after a RS to produce long response durations in the invalid trials.  相似文献

The concept of general intelligence (g) summarizes the well established finding that scores on separate cognitive tasks are positively correlated, indicating a trait common to many aspects of information processing. Inspection time is a well-established correlate of IQ, where those of a higher IQ can correctly identify a briefly presented stimulus with a greater level of accuracy than those of a lower IQ. This study used two age-matched samples, selected on the basis of their scores on Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices from the undergraduate population of Bangor University. In order to address the confound of inspection time and IQ of previous ITT-ERP research, each participant of the presented study performed an IT task with the same five levels of stimulus duration while undergoing 64-channel EEG recording. The high IQ group made significantly fewer errors at each level of stimulus duration and exhibited a significantly larger N1 response. N1 latency and other ERP components did not distinguish the two IQ groups. Given the specificity of ERP group differences to the N1, the results of the present study suggest that the link between IT performance and g is attributable to individual differences in directing attention to a spatial region.  相似文献
