Some possible forms of lexicographic evaluation

A set of definitions leading to an axiom set which makes possible distinction between two or more forms of lexicographic choice is offered. It is shown that, by treating value as quantized and only taking a finite number of levels for each attribute of a multi-attribute choice situation, lexicographic evaluation might be subsumed under more familiar forms of choice model. Special cases and implications are discussed.

This is the case of a young woman suffering from a narcissistic personality disturbance with Oedipal aspects. The development of the analytic treatment is stressed through the analysis of her dreams. The analytic setting provided an appropriate mirroring Self-object. Thereby the patient has had the opportunity to express her own defective female grandiose Self, which was at the base of her disturbances.

The case of Anna presented by Professor Giliberti is discussed from an interpersonal perspective. Attention is given to Anna's real experiences of hypocrisy, social inadequacy, hatred and blame projection. Paranoid aspects are emphasized and seen as connected with a disparity between appearance and reality in the communicative pattern of the family.     

Some effects of audio and visual stimulation on multiple forms of stereotypy

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of audio and visual stimulation, alone or in combination, on the behavior of three children who displayed multiple forms of stereotypy (e.g., hand mouthing, body rocking). The results of experiment 1 showed that all three participants displayed different forms of stereotypy when audio and visual stimulation were provided versus when no stimulation was provided. The results of experiments 2 and 3 showed that the form of one participant's stereotypy, but not the other two, changed when visual stimulation and audio stimulation were presented separately. Overall, the results suggest that ambient stimulation may influence both the form of and time allocation to stereotypy. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

The elegant solution to the problem of impotence

Although most therapists are committed to debunking the dual myths that sex requires an erection and that sex equals intercourse, sex researchers continue to use successful intercourse as a primary dependent variable. It is here asserted that RET therapists would do well to approach the problem of erectile dysfunction from a more elegant philosophical perspective. The treatment approach outlined here is aimed at reducing client disturbance as well as increasing sexual satisfaction rather than at simply helping the client to regain his potency.     

Some reflections on "MMPI short forms: a literature review"

Stevens and Reilley (1980) have suggested that recent changes in the methodological approaches for developing short forms of the MMPI make them an expanding and fruitful area of research. Since Stevens and Reilley did not address several important issues in the development and use of Short forms, these issues are reviewed and suggestions are presented for future research with short forms.     

The Diane Pretty case and the occasional impotence of justification in ethics

Most discussions in ethics argue that a certain practice or act is morally justified, with any underlying theory taken as supporting a guide to general action by aiding discovery of the objectively and singularly right thing to do. I suggest that this oversimplifies the agent's own experience of the moral dilemma, and I take the recent English case of Diane Pretty's request for assisted suicide as an example. The law refused, despite the obvious sympathy many felt for her. This only appears paradoxical, I suggest, because too much is expected of the concept of justification, and because moral understanding of a particular case is too often reduced to the legalistic search for general justificatory reasons. The starting point should be, I conclude, a full awareness of the phrase "there but for the grace of God go I".     

On the alleged explanatory impotence/conceptual vacuity of substance dualism

In the last decade, there has been a notable upsurge in property (PD) and generic substance dualism (SD). By SD I mean the view that there is a spiritual substantial soul that is different from but variously related to its body. SD includes Cartesian, certain forms of late Medieval hylomorphic (e.g., Aquinas'), and Haskerian emergent SD. Nevertheless, some form of physicalism remains the majority view in philosophy of mind. Several fairly standard objections have been raised against SD, and SDists have been preoccupied with these objections. As a result, a potent objection has not been given the attention it deserves. The purpose of this article is to fill that lacuna by raising the visibility of this objection and providing plausible responses to it. First, I shall clarify the explanatory–impotence challenge and, second, provide defeaters against it. Note that several of the issues to follow apply both to PD and SD. I will focus mostly on SD, but sometimes PD is a part of the discussion in that certain arguments for and against PD indirectly affect SD. When it is important for me to note that either SD or PD is specifically being addressed, I will notify the reader.     

Mathematical forms and forms of mathematics: leaving the shores of extensional mathematics

In this paper, I introduce the idea that some important parts of contemporary pure mathematics are moving away from what I call the extensional point of view. More specifically, these fields are based on criteria of identity that are not extensional. After presenting a few cases, I concentrate on homotopy theory where the situation is particularly clear. Moreover, homotopy types are arguably fundamental entities of geometry, thus of a large portion of mathematics, and potentially to all mathematics, at least according to some speculative research programs.
