This study synchronized sampling of point of gaze (PG) and hand movements in a fast aiming task, using a 60- and a 120-Hz sampling frequency. The subjects moved eyes, head, hand, and trunk freely. For limb kinematics, a significant difference between sampling conditions was only found for the number of accelerations in the profile following peak velocity of the hand. For PG movements, no differences were found for initiation time, saccade angle, fixation duration, and overall number of saccades. However, significant differences were observed for saccade duration. Previously, an invariant feature was found for the ratio of PG and hand response times (50%). For both sampling frequencies, a significant correlation and, thus, temporal coupling was found between PG response time and time to peak acceleration for the hand. Depending on the measures required, a 60-Hz sampling of PG and hand movements may provide as meaningful results as a 120-Hz sampling.  相似文献

Indications of earlier research are that individuals exhibiting a consistent hand preference are better coordinated on selected motor tasks than peers with inconsistent hand preference. The present study examined eye-hand coordination via inter- and intramodal matching behavior by handedness groups for 55 5- and 6-yr.-olds using the Pinboard Test. Analysis indicated the Consistent group scored better, leading to the speculation that children with consistent laterality may possess an advantage in interhemispheric communication, especially when the task requires coordination of both limbs.  相似文献

Eye-hand coordination was investigated during a task of finger pointing toward visual targets viewed through wedge prisms. Hand and eye latencies and movement times were identical during the control condition and at the end of prism exposure. A temporal reorganization of eye and hand movements was observed during the course of adaptation. During the earlier stage of prism exposure, the time gap between the end of the eye saccade and the onset of hand movement was increased from a control time of 23 to 68 msec. This suggests that a time-consuming process occurred during the early prism-exposure period. The evolution of this time gap was correlated with the evolution of pointing errors during the early stage of prism exposure, in such a way that both measures increased at the onset of prism exposure and decreased almost back to control values within about 10 trials. However, spatial error was not entirely corrected, even late in prism exposure when the temporal organization of eye and hand had returned to baseline. These data suggest that two different adaptive mechanisms were at work: a rather short-term mechanism, involved in normal coordination of spatially aligned eye and hand systems, and a long-term mechanism, responsible for remapping spatially misaligned systems. The former mechanism can be strategically employed to quickly optimize accuracy in a situation involving misalignment, but completely adaptive behavior must await the slower-acting latter mechanism to achieve longterm spatial alignment.  相似文献

Typing span and coordination of word viewing times with word typing times in copytyping were examined. In Experiment 1, typists copied passages of text while their eye movements were measured. Viewing location was determined during each eye fixation and was used to control the amount of usable visual information. Viewing constraints decreased interword saccade size when fewer than 7 character spaces of text were visible to the right of fixation and increased interkeypress times when fewer than 3 character spaces of text were visible. The eye-hand span amounted to 2.8 character spaces. Experiment 2 revealed increases in word typing times and word viewing times as biomechanic typing difficulty increased and word frequency decreased. These findings are consistent with a model of eye-hand coordination that postulates that eye-hand coordination involves central and peripheral processes.  相似文献

Eye-hand coordination is required to accurately perform daily activities that involve reaching, grasping and manipulating objects. Studies using aiming, grasping or sequencing tasks have shown a stereotypical temporal coupling pattern where the eyes are directed to the object in advance of the hand movement, which may facilitate the planning and execution required for reaching. While the temporal coordination between the ocular and manual systems has been extensively investigated in adults, relatively little is known about the typical development of eye-hand coordination. Therefore, the current study addressed an important knowledge gap by characterizing the profile of eye-hand coupling in typically developing school-age children (n = 57) and in a cohort of adults (n = 30). Eye and hand movements were recorded concurrently during the performance of a bead threading task which consists of four distinct movements: reach to bead, grasp, reach to needle, and thread. Results showed a moderate to high correlation between eye and hand latencies in children and adults, supporting that both movements were planned in parallel. Eye and reach latencies, latency differences, and dwell time during grasping and threading, showed significant age-related differences, suggesting eye-hand coupling becomes more efficient in adolescence. Furthermore, visual acuity, stereoacuity and accommodative facility were also found to be associated with the efficiency of eye-hand coordination in children. Results from this study can serve as reference values when examining eye and hand movement during the performance of fine motor skills in children with neurodevelopmental disorders.  相似文献

The validity of Bowers and Heilman's (1983) hypothesis that both hemisphere-hemispace and hemisphere-hand connections contribute to the laterality effects for tactile bisection task was examined with 24 children 6.7 yr. old. Stimulus spatial location did not influence laterality.  相似文献

Profiles of right hemisphere language and speech following brain bisection   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A variety of language tasks were administered to two patients who had undergone staged callosal section in an effort to control otherwise intractable epilepsy. Right hemisphere lexical capacity varied and preliminary results suggest that the case displaying greater semantic power also possessed some syntactic competence. This same case (V.P.) was also capable of expressive language from the right hemisphere. This rare capacity allowed for fresh observations on the dynamic interactions of conscious control that occur in this kind of patient.  相似文献

The relation between progress in the control of posture (i.e., the achievement of self-sitting posture) and the developmental transition from two-handed to one-handed engagement in infant reaching was investigated. Two groups of 5- to 8-month-old infants, who were either able or yet unable to sit on their own, were videotaped while they reached for objects in four different posture conditions that provided varying amounts of body support. Videotapes of infant reaches were microanalyzed to determine the relative engagement of both hands during reaches. Results demonstrate the interaction between postural development and the morphology of infant reaching. Nonsitting infants displayed symmetrical and synergistic engagement of both arms and hands while reaching in all but the seated posture condition. Sitting infants, by contrast, showed asymmetrical and lateralized (one-handed) reaches in all posture conditions. Results also show that, aside from posture, the perceived spatial arrangement of the object display is a determinant of infant reaching. Combined, these results are discussed as evidence for the interaction between postural and perceptual development in the control of early eye-hand coordination.  相似文献

In the present study we investigated the effects of different durations of using high-heeled shoes on plantar pressure and gait. A questionnaire survey and dynamic plantar pressure measurements were performed in 20 control females and 117 females who had worn high-heeled shoes for a long time. According to the duration of using high-heeled shoes (as specified in the questionnaire), subjects were divided into a control group and five groups with different durations of use (i.e. <2 years, 2–5 years, 6–10 years, 11–20 years and >20 years). Parameters, including peak pressure, impulse and pressure duration, in different plantar regions were measured with the Footscan pressure plate. The 2–5 years group had smaller midfoot contact areas for both feet and higher subtalar joint mobility, while the 6–10 years group had larger midfoot contact areas for both feet and prolonged foot flat phase during gait. The peak pressure and impulse under the second and fourth metatarsus were increased with the prolonged wearing of high-heeled shoes, and the pressure and impulse under the midfoot were substantially reduced in the 2–5 years group. The findings suggest that long-term use of high-heeled shoes can induce changes in arch morphology: the longitudinal arch tends to be elevated within 2–5 years; the longitudinal arch tends to be flattened within 6–10 years; and the forefoot latitudinal arch tends to collapse in more than 20 years.  相似文献

IntroductionFlat feet in children negatively affect lower limb alignment and cause adverse health-related problems. The long-term application of foot orthoses (FOs) may have the potential to improve lower limb coordination and its variability.AimTo evaluate the effects of long-term use of arch support FOs on inter-joint coordination and coordination variability in children with flexible flat feet.MethodsThirty boys with flexible flat feet were randomly assigned to the experimental (EG) and control groups. The EG used medial arch support FOs during daily activities over a four-month period while the control group received a flat 2-mm-thick insole for the same time period. Lower-limb coordination and variability during the 3 sub-stance phases were quantified using a vector coding technique.ResultsFrontal plane ankle-hip coordination in EG during mid-stance changed to an anti-phase pattern (156.9°) in the post-test compared to an in-phase (221.1°) in the pre-test of EG and post-test of CG (222.7). Frontal plane knee-hip coordination in EG during loading response (LR) changed to an anti-phase pattern (116°) in the post-test compared to an in-phase (35.5°) in the pre-test of EG and post-test of CG (35.3). Ankle inversion/eversion-knee internal/external rotation joint coupling angle in EG changed to an in-phase pattern (59°) in the post-test compared to a proximal phase (89°) in the pre-test. Coupling angle variability increased in the post-test of EG for sagittal plane ankle-hip during push-off, transverse plane ankle-hip during LR and mid-stance, and transverse plane knee-hip during LR and mid-stance compared to pre-test of EG and post-test of CG.ConclusionThe long-term use of arch support FOs proved to be effective to alter lower limb coordination and coordination variability during walking in children with flexible flat feet. This new insight into coordinative function may be useful for improving corrective exercise strategies planned for children with flat feet.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of unintentional (spontaneous) coordination on high attentional visual load. More precisely, we wondered whether such coordination could free up some attentional resources and help improve performance in other more demanding attentional tasks. An experiment was performed in which participant attentional allocation was challenged by performing three tasks simultaneously while simultaneously being induced to unintentional entrain to an environmental rhythm. The first task was an interception task associated with a Stroop test to increase their attentional load. The second task was a reaction time test to alarms in different modalities (auditory, visual and bimodal) which was used to assess participant attentional load. The third task was a motor task in which participants were asked to swing their legs at a preferred frequency. The interface background brightness intensity was either synchronized in real time using a bidirectional coupling to participant leg movement or the background brightness was not changing at all. Our results on the reaction time task demonstrated that participants exhibited better reaction times for alarms in the bimodal condition than in the auditory condition and lastly for the visual condition. Also, participants exhibited a lower reaction time to alarms when the background brightness was synchronizing with their leg regardless the alarm modality. Overall, our study suggests a beneficial effect of unintentional environmental coordination on attentional resource allocation and highlights the importance of bidirectionality in interaction.  相似文献

Attentional focus affects performance and learning of motor tasks. An external attentional focus (on the effects of movement) can lead to more efficient and effective movements compared to an internal focus (on body movement itself). According to the “constrained action hypothesis”, an external focus facilitates fast and reflexive movement control while an internal focus leads to disruption of automatic coordination processes. Such disruption should be apparent in the complexity of movement. In this study, multiscale entropy measures were used to investigate if the external focus is related to superior coordination complexity compared to internal focus. Twenty participants were divided in two groups that balanced over an unstable platform in fourteen trials over two days, either with internal or external focus of attention instructions, followed by seven retention trials on the third day. Multiscale entropy measures were used to quantify complexity of motions of the platform, the participant, and the composite of participant and platform motions. Results were contrary to expectations. For the external focus group, despite better overall performance, multiscale entropy values of participant and composite motions were lower in some scales compared to the internal focus group, especially in the first and last days. This may be consistent with previous findings that predictability increases during learning of a balance task. Results also indicate the need to identify the correct physiological interpretation of single or multiscale entropy measures. Further investigation is needed to establish if entropy differences are causally related to performance and learning advantages of the external focus.  相似文献

ObjectivesNumerous recent studies showed that physical training can enhance cognitive abilities, such as attention, spatial ability, memory performance, and executive functions. However, most of these studies focused on the efficiency of cardiovascular training, whereas evidence for combined motor-cognitive training emphasizing coordination abilities is scarce. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of motor-cognitive coordination training and moderate cardiovascular training on cognitive functions and to test whether these effects were related to participant's fitness level.Design and methodWe tested 50 physically active (mean age = 23.5 years, SD = 3.2) and 56 sedentary participants (mean age = 23.4 years, SD = 3.2) in a pretest-training-posttest design with 12 sessions of moderate cardiovascular training (≈60% HRmax) or motor-cognitive coordination training. The training groups were compared to a passive control group. At pretest and posttest, participants performed an untrained motor-cognitive coordination task, measures of executive control (cognitive flexibility, inhibition, working memory), spatial ability, and fluid intelligence. Results and conclusionsWe found improved coordination abilities in the coordination training group, but no transfer of training to cognitive measures in physically active participants. However, sedentary participants showed larger improvements in terms of inhibition in the coordination training group compared to the remaining groups, while the cardiovascular training group improved in cognitive flexibility compared to the remaining groups. In sum, there are positive but differential effects of cardiovascular training and coordination training on cognitive performance in sedentary young participants, suggesting that coordination training may be a useful intervention especially for individuals that cannot perform cardiovascular training.  相似文献

Subjects were intructed to select one rod to lie halfway in length between two given rods. These bisection instructions imply an additive model in the subjective metric. However, the data were inherently nonadditive; the length of the bisector could be an increasing or a decreasing function of the length of one given rod, depending on the length of the other given rod. A convexity analysis and a nonmetric analysis both showed that no monotone transformation could make the data additive. The bisection problem is used to contrast the axiomatic and functional approaches to measurement theory.  相似文献

Normal participants display a leftward bias when bisecting horizontal lines. It has been proposed that bisection errors can be affected by representational biases. We investigated the possibility that this effect could also be explained as the result of perceptual cueing. Participants bisected horizontal lines with identical arrows arranged around the lines, all pointing to the same end. The arrows significantly affected bisection placement, although participants bisected significantly away from the direction the arrows pointed to. The findings favor the hypothesis that cueing, rather than representation, can affect bisection errors.  相似文献
