Under a psychophysical trials procedure, pigeons were presented with a red light of one duration followed by a green light of a second duration. Eight geometrically spaced base durations were paired with one of four shorter and four longer durations as the alternate member of a duration pair, with different pairs randomly intermixed. One choice was reinforced if red had lasted longer than green, and a second choice was reinforced if green had lasted longer. Performance was compared when all the base durations and their pair members were included (entire-range condition) or when only the four longest base durations and their comparison durations (restricted-range condition) were used. Discrimination sensitivity decreased for longer duration pairs under both conditions, supporting a memory-based account. Sensitivity was lower under the restricted-range condition. Under both conditions, a bias to report "green as longer" increased as the second green duration increased. Bias changed as a matching function of the green-duration predictiveness of the correct choice. The results are related to a quantitative model of timing and remembering proposed by Staddon.  相似文献

In a conditioning protocol, the onset of the conditioned stimulus ([CS]) provides information about when to expect reinforcement (unconditioned stimulus [US]). There are two sources of information from the CS in a delay conditioning paradigm in which the CS-US interval is fixed. The first depends on the informativeness, the degree to which CS onset reduces the average expected time to onset of the next US. The second depends only on how precisely a subject can represent a fixed-duration interval (the temporal Weber fraction). In three experiments with mice, we tested the differential impact of these two sources of information on rate of acquisition of conditioned responding (CS-US associability). In Experiment 1, we showed that associability (the inverse of trials to acquisition) increased in proportion to informativeness. In Experiment 2, we showed that fixing the duration of the US-US interval or the CS-US interval or both had no effect on associability. In Experiment 3, we equated the increase in information produced by varying the C/T ratio with the increase produced by fixing the duration of the CS-US interval. Associability increased with increased informativeness, but, as in Experiment 2, fixing the CS-US duration had no effect on associability. These results are consistent with the view that CS-US associability depends on the increased rate of reward signaled by CS onset. The results also provide further evidence that conditioned responding is temporally controlled when it emerges.  相似文献

In auditory memory span experiments an extra word presented at the end of the list impairs performance on the last few items even though it is completely redundant; delaying this stimulus suffix past the time when an additional memory item would have occurred--so that the rate of presentation is retarded for the suffix--reduces the magnitude of the performance impairment. One account of this pattern of results is that during presentation of the items the subject adjusts periodic bursts of attention to the regular cadence of new information. Since an immediate suffix is in time with this cadence and a delayed suffix not, the larger effect of the former is explained without appeal to any process dependent on real time. In the present study the stimulus items were presented in an arhythmic manner with interstimulus intervals ranging from 100 to 900 ms on a random basis. Under these conditions the same effect of delaying the suffix was observed as is typical of rhythmic stimulus presentation; therefore, the rhythm hypothesis for the effect is not supported.  相似文献

The flash-lag effect (FLE), when studied in rapid serial visual presentations, has shown that participants perceived a target presented in a stream prior to its simultaneous out-of-stream replica (T. Bachmann & E. P?der, 2001). In the present study, the authors introduced a precue to the single flashed, isolated target to see if drawing bottom-up attention to the flash also would compensate for the effects of the mechanisms that influence the processing of in-stream items. The extent of the flash-lead effect in the precued condition was considerably larger than the lead-effect in earlier experiments and in a control experiment where no precue was presented for the flashed targets. For the first 200-250 ms from the beginning of the stream, flash-lead dominated. The FLE did not appear until 400 ms after stream onset. The authors interpret results as the combined relative effects of in-stream target masking, in-stream sensory facilitation, and spatial-attentional facilitation.  相似文献

In Experiment I, three groups of 20 Ss each were exposed to a light of 550 mμ (yellowish-green) for 60 sec and then viewed a random sequence of wavelengths with instructions to respond only to the original color. The instructions given the three groups were worded differently in an attempt to vary the strength of a set-to-discriminate assumed to be created by this procedure. The three groups produced similar gradients, each with a peak of responding at 540 mμ, in agreement with Kalish's (1958) published gradient for the 550 mμ standard stimulus value. It was suggested that the nature of the task is such that a strong discriminatory set is produced regardless of the wording of the instructions.

A temporal analysis of the gradient as it develops during the testing revealed that initially the peak of responding occurs at 550 mμ; but as testing progresses, it shifts gradually in the direction of the shorter wavelengths (purer greens). Experiment II was performed to test the generality of the phenomenon of regression to the primary color. Two groups of 20 Ss each were tested for generalization following exposure to 510 mμ (bluish-green) and 525 mμ (pure green), respectively. We predicted that the 510 mμ gradient would reveal a progressive shift toward the longer wavelengths (purer greens), whereas the 525 mμ gradient would show no tendency to shift. The results were strikingly in accord with these predictions.

We concluded that although a physiological process could not be ruled out, the verbal labeling of the standard stimulus value may well be responsible for the regression of the gradient toward the primary color.

Visual similarity, stimulus probability, and stimulus contrast were manipulated in two memory-scanning experiments to determine how stimulus probability affects encoding. Two hypotheses were tested: The first, a featural facilitation hypothesis, localizes the effect of stimulus probability on feature extraction; the second claims that stimulus probability has its effect on stimulus recognition. In both experiments, visual similarity was found to slow encoding, particularly under low-contrast conditions. This effect was larger for low probability stimuli than for high probability stimuli and increased as the difference in probability between two visually similar stimuli increased. These results are inconsistent with the featural facilitation hypothesis, but can be explained in terms of differential priming of internal recognition responses for members of the stimulus set, such that more probable members are more easily recognized.  相似文献

In an absolute judgment task, total information transmitted about a set of stimuli increases as the dimensionality of the stimuli is increased. However, as the number of dimensions is increased, information transmitted about each component dimension decreases. Four factors were proposed that might, singly or in combination, account for this decrement: stimulus duration, interdimensional interference, distraction, and response complexity. The results of four experiments established that each of these factors may be operative under appropriate circumstances. It was also concluded that component dimensions were processed simultaneously rather than sequentially. However, the processing was not truly parallel because the input channels were not independent of one another.  相似文献

Fixed-interval stimulus control   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
Chlorpromazine was studied for its effects on responding under a second-order schedule in which food was presented following a sequence of 20 one-minute fixed-interval components. A brief visual stimulus occurred at the completion of each fixed interval including the one that terminated with food presentation. Chlorpromazine showed rate-dependent effects in that it increased low rates in the early components of the second-order schedule and, to a lesser extent, decreased high rates in the later components. Chlorpromazine also increased rates in the early quarters within the 1-min fixed-internal components and to a smaller extent decreased rates in the final quarter. The alteration in the patterns of responding within 1-min fixed-interval components terminating in a brief stimulus presentation was substantially less than that which occurred throughout the succession of 1-min fixed-interval components terminating in food presentation, thus suggesting that the presentation of the brief stimulus exerted more control over responding within components than did food presentation over the sequence of components. This result and others suggest that studies using drugs may be useful in elucidating the factors controlling patterns of responding in second-order schedules.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether hierarchical categorization would result from a combination of contextually controlled conditional discrimination training, stimulus generalization, and stimulus equivalence. First, differential selection responses to a specific stimulus feature were brought under contextual control. This contextual control was hierarchical in that stimuli at the top of the hierarchy all evoked one response, whereas those at the bottom each evoked different responses. The evocative functions of these stimuli generalized in predictable ways along a dimension of physical similarity. Then, these functions were indirectly acquired by a set of nonsense syllables that were related via transitivity relations to the originally trained stimuli. These nonsense syllables effectively served as names for the different stimulus classes within each level of the hierarchy.  相似文献

In this study the influence of irrelevant stimulus changes from one trial to another in a serial reaction time task was investigated. Two experiments were performed in which subjects were required to respond to stimulus colour. Four colours were mapped on two response keys, so that colour and response repetition effects could be dissociated. In Experiment 1, the irrelevant stimulus dimension was location and in Experiment 2 it was shape. Both experiments were performed with a short and a long response-stimulus interval (RSI)-condition. In both experiments, the irrelevant dimension influenced the response repetition effect but not the colour repetition effect. In the reaction times, a response alternation effect was observed only when the irrelevant location of the stimulus changed in the long RSI-condition. The error rates showed a response alternation benefit for both irrelevant dimensions, in the short and the long RSI-condition. The benefit for response alternations is explained in terms of a response bias towards change that is triggered by a changing stimulus feature. We assume that the response bias is stronger for location than for colour and that accuracy is more sensitive to this bias than response latencies.  相似文献

We aimed to investigate whether novel stimulus relations would emerge from stimulus correlations when those relations explicitly conflicted with reinforced relations. In a symbolic matching-to-sample task using kanji characters as stimuli, we arranged class-specific incorrect comparison stimuli in each of three classes. After presenting either Ax or Cx stimuli as samples, choices of Bx were reinforced and choices of Gx or Hx were not. Tests for symmetry, and combined symmetry and transitivity, showed the emergence of three 3-member (AxBxCx) stimulus classes in 5 of 5 human participants. Subsequent tests for all possible emergent relations between Ax, Bx, Cx and the class-specific incorrect comparisons Gx and Hx showed that these relations emerged for 4 of 5 the participants after extended overtraining of the baseline relations. These emergent relations must have been based on stimulus-stimulus correlations, and were not properties of the trained discriminated operants, because they required control by relations explicitly extinguished during training. This result supports theoretical accounts of emergent relations that emphasize stimulus correlation over operant contingencies.  相似文献

Two sets of photographic slides, one made up of scenes from the geographic environment, the other of works of non-representational modern art, were scaled for complexity by obtaining judges’ ratings of amount of variation present on several specified stimulus attributes. Fourteen slides defining a sevenpoint scale of complexity were selected from each set and given to college students to obtain measures of (a) amount of exploratory behavior (number of times S chose to expose each slide briefly), and (b) preference (evaluative ratings on a seven-point scale). In accordance with prediction, the former measure emerged as a linearly increasing function of complexity, while the relationship between complexity and preference was curvilinear, reaching a maximum at an intermediate level of complexity. The results are related to Berlyne’s distinction between specific and diversive stimulus exploration, and implications for the study of aesthetics are discussed.  相似文献
