WHAT WE SHOULD STUDY, PROBLEMS WE SHOULD SOLVE: PERSPECTIVES OF TWO CONSTITUENCIES

Qualitative data from management and non-management employees were content analyzed to assess their perceptions of what organizational problems they would most like academic researchers to study. These data are then compared to the publications that have appeared in empirical journals over ten journal years (Campbell, Daft, and Hulin, 1982). Results indicate: (1) specific problem areas health care practitioners want studied: (2) strong congruence between the interests of the management and non-management subsamples; and (3) areas where academicians are not meeting the research needs of this sample.     

TELLING SOMETHING WE CAN'T KNOW:

An interpersonal verb such as annoy or admire can be categorized according to whether its grammatical subject or grammatical object initiates the interaction described by the verb Such a verb can also be categorized according to whether a derived adjective describes its grammatical subject (eg., annoying ) or its grammatical object (eg., admirable ) Although there has been much speculation (eg., Brown & Fish, 1983) that these and other characteristics of these verbs shed light on basic principles of human social interaction, we argue that research to date has failed to demonstrate directly any real-time consequences of these verbs during language comprehension. We present evidence that the initiating-reacting distinction predicts on-line changes in the accessibility of these verbs' arguments, but that the existence of a derived adjective does not. We conclude that tasks that question subjects explicitly about language may fail to reflect the ordinary processes of language comprehension

The shooting at Oak Creek, WI, where six people were killed and four wounded in a Sikh temple, is the result of certain exclusionary policies and rhetoric in American society. The language of exclusion and creating an internal ‘Other’ has been applied to various minority groups in the USA. With an increase in Islamophobia after 9/11, and broad categorization of brown bodies as suspect, there is an intense antipathy to those of West and South Asian ancestry. The tragedy of Oak Creek is the culmination of multiple, intersecting dehumanizing trajectories in American history, and is an American tragedy on multiple levels.     

WHAT SHOULD WE TEACH IN READING?

Arthur Gates was a prominent reading educator of the last century. As a writer of over 300 articles and books on the teaching of reading he had a profound effect on many aspects of classroom literacy instruction. While this short article was written 50 years ago it still clearly speaks to all teachers about what is really important in the teaching of reading. This material is taken from a new IRA book titled, Classics in Literacy Education: Historical Perspectives for Today's Teachers (2002).     

DO WE SEE APPLES AS EDIBLE?

Do we (sometimes) perceive apples as edible? One could argue that it is just a manner of speaking to say so: we do not really see an object as edible, we see it as having certain shape, size and color and we only infer on the basis of these properties that it is. I argue that we do indeed see objects as edible, and do not just believe that they are. My argument proceeds in two steps. First, I point out that Susanna Siegel's influential argument in favor of the claim that we represent sortal properties perceptually does not work. Second, I argue that we can fix this argument if we replace the sortal property in question with the property of being edible, climbable or Q‐able in general.     

MULTIPLE-ACT CRITERIA IN THE VALIDATION OF COMMUNICATION TRAITS: WHAT DO WE GAIN AND WHAT DO WE LOSE?

Recent dissatisfaction with trait explanations of human communication has given rise to the use of multiple-act criteria in co-relational studies of trait/behavior relationships. In order to overcome the practical problems of gathering multiple-act data, researchers have relied on self-reports. It was hypothesized that the use of self-reports has led to biased estimates of the utility of the multiple-act approach. This hypothesis was generally supported and its implications examined.
