Ethnic working class women's special responsibility for transmitting their heritage ties them, often painfully, to that heritage and to their traditional gender role. Psychologically, they experience a unique set of exodus stresses. When they seek psychotherapy the process can place them in a double bind in that their personal striving deeply threatens their ethnic and class ties. These women may leave treatment prematurely unless clinicians are willing to recognize the unique configuration of symptoms that derive in large part from their subcultures of origin. By challenging their own ethnic, racial and class identities, clinicians can open up new treatment possibilities to help strengthen positive group identity, enhance self-esteem and support personal striving in their patients and in themselves.  相似文献

Parent advice books written for the traditional, intact biological family represent maternal and paternal emotion quite differently from one another [S. A. Shields and B. A. Koster (1989) Emotional Stereotyping of Parents in Child-Rearing Manuals, Social Psychology Quarterly, Vol. 52, pp. 44–55]. This study examined gender-specific references to emotion in advice books directed to adoptive parents, step-parents, single parents, and married couples in order to determine the relationship between beliefs about women's and men's emotional natures and beliefs about caregiving. The gendered representation of caregivers' emotion is remarkably consistent across time, parenting genre, and author characteristics. Books directed to parents portray women as at risk for excessive emotions (both positive and negative) that have negative developmental impact on the child. In contrast, men are largely encouraged to be emotionally expressive, and when they are cautioned about their emotional display, the caution is restricted to negative emotions that are elicited by external emotional hazards: the children, the spouse (or ex-spouse), or the situation. In contrast, marriage manuals portray spouses as mutually responsible for their own and their spouse's emotional well-being. Husbands and wives are encouraged to express unlimited positive emotion and to engage in moderated ventilation of negative emotion. In our discussion of these results we consider the role of emotion representation in promoting a culture of mother blaming. We are indebted to Diane Early, Diane Hayashino, Nancy Kohn, and Sonja Jensen for their assistance in collecting and interpreting the data. The translational metaphor in psychoanalysis refers to the traditional method of interpreting or restating the meaning of verbal and behavioral acts of a patient in other, presumably more accurate terms that specify the forces and conflicts underlying symptoms. The analyst translates the clinical phenomenology to explain its true meaning and origin. This model of analytic process has been challenged from different vantage points by authors presenting alternative conceptions of therapeutic action. Although the temptation to find and make interpretations of clinical material is difficult to resist, behaving in this way places the analyst in the position of a teacher or diagnostician, seeking a specific etiology, which has not proven fruitful. Despite its historical appeal, I argue that the translational model is a misleading and anachronistic version of what actually occurs in psychoanalysis. I emphasize instead the capacity of analysis to promote the emergence of new forms of representation, or figuration, from the unconscious, using the work of Lacan, Laplanche, and Modell to exemplify this reformulation, and provide clinical illustrations of how it looks in practice.  相似文献

According to the author, the necessary change to a new psychoanalytic paradigm of femininity can only take place if the patriarchal discourse of psychoanalytic metatheory is systematically deconstructed. Only then can a reconstruction of this discourse occur with a view toward the emancipation of both genders.  相似文献

The demographic shift toward extended longevity has led to a commensurate increase in the length of the working and productive years, and with it an increase in the number of so-called "older" patients who come into psychoanalysis or psychoanalytic psychotherapy. This led the Psychoanalytic Research and Development Fund to support a four-year study by a small group of experienced psychoanalysts of "the older patient in psychoanalysis." Aging and old age are considered to be the final developmental crisis of the successive epigenetic phases of the life cycle. Eleven case presentations and various briefer clinical vignettes informed us that older and even old individuals, who seek treatment themselves or who are appropriately referred, respond in a positive and effective fashion to psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. As do younger patients in analysis, such older people, motivated by the wish to make the most of what time is left, become interested in understanding their pasts with respect to the present and the future. The life stories of two older men who undertook analysis, and the courses and outcomes of their analyses, illustrate our findings and impressions. In both cases conflicts and difficulties from earlier developmental phases, extending back even as far as the oedipal and preoedipal years, were revived during their older years. And although these conflicts might have been beyond definitive resolution, what is salient is the extent to which they were ameliorated: sufficiently that they did not impede a satisfactory adaptive solution of the final crisis of the normative sequences of the life cycle.  相似文献

The changing aims of psychoanalysis are discussed with reference to Money-Kyrle's paper on the subject. The theory of dammed-up libido, the theory of moral conflict and the theory of misrepresentations and perversion of reality which he described, all imply different aims. It is argued that, in addition, the theory of projective identification leads to a radical change in the aim of treatment which can now be formulated in terms of helping the patient regain lost parts of the self.  相似文献
