Introduction to the Symposium

Abstract. The articles in this section were presented at the conference “Toward a Theology of Disease” sponsored by the Zygon Center in October, 2002. This was a second conference designed to address the question of what the science‐religion dialogue could contribute to the larger discussion of the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS. The conference brought a wide range of perspectives to this question from different religious traditions. I draw them together here around the idea that Philip Hefner introduced in his keynote address: our fragmented experience of the world. The notion of fragmentation opens the door for both a recognition of several possible approaches to building a theology of disease and the pluralism of religious traditions, as well as providing a framework for integrating our full awareness that HIV/AIDS is a problem without solutions and requiring a level of humility in posing any real answers. The essays clearly suggest that the question remains perplexing but that our efforts do show that a multifaith, multidisciplinary religion‐science dialogue can contribute significantly to the larger discussion.     

Witness to History: Introduction to Symposium on Transhistorical Catastrophe

This paper introduces the symposium on transhistorical catastrophe by illustrating some differences between American relational and French analytic approaches to the study and treatment of trauma. The work of Davoine and Gaudillière is presented to familiarize the reader with their unique and eclectic approach to researching “madness.” Preparing for the dialogue that follows, I briefly present the discussants, who collectively take the discussion of transhistorical catastrophe from psychoanalysis through history, literature, quantum science, and linguistics.     

易感人格的工作记忆特征对药物成瘾的调节机制

药物成瘾是指持续使用成瘾药物, 出现耐受性和戒断症状并严重阻碍正常社会功能的精神疾病。工作记忆在调节药物成瘾行为中扮演了中心角色：在神经易感性和易感人格特质基础上, 低工作记忆容量导致危险决策和去抑制性, 进而影响寻求药物和复吸行为。目前的研究基于已经产生成瘾的个体, 无法区别神经易感性、人格特质以及工作记忆缺陷是药物成瘾的原因还是结果; 而且, 仅从认知角度研究药物成瘾的原因, 会忽视该行为受多个因素影响的事实。     

Symposium on Ripstein's Force and Freedom: Introduction

This introduction provides a very brief sketch of the fundamental claims of Arthur Ripstein's Force and Freedom before locating the criticisms of his interlocutors in relation to those claims. Valentini and Sangiovanni are situated as critics of the Kantian frame, while Ronzoni and Williams are critics situated within that frame.     

Introduction to Diving Beneath the Waves: In Memory of Tom Ravenette

Recent explorations of the relationship between narrative and self, particularly those tied to social constructionism, have served as a valuable corrective to the still prevalent tendency in psychology to divorce the self from its social surround. Yet certain of these explorations, by privileging the social over the individual, have led to a vision of selfhood that is problematic in its own right. Specifically, it is argued that, even though the "tools" employed in the construction of selfhood are social in nature, the configurational acts through which this construction occurs are better conceived in poetic terms, as imaginative labor seeking to give form and meaning to experience. In considering the poetic construction of selfhood, this article attempts to articulate further the relationship between narrative and self, the cultural dimension of personal experience, and the importance of the idea of narrative for expanding the scope of psychological knowledge.
