For this study, we developed a simple pressure and heat stimulator that can quantitatively control pressure and provide heat stimulation to intra- and interdigit areas. The developed stimulator consists of a control unit, drive units, and tactors. The control unit controls the stimulation parameters, such as stimulation types, intensity, time, and channel, and transmits a created signal of stimulation to the drive units. The drive units operate pressure and heat tactors in response to commands from the control unit. The pressure and heat tactors can display various stimulation intensities quantitatively, apply stimulation continuously, and adjust the stimulation areas. Additionally, they can easily be attached to and detached from the digits. The developed pressure and heat stimulator is small in total size, easy to install, and inexpensive to manufacture. The new stimulator operated stably in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environment without affecting the obtained images. A preliminary functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment confirmed that differences in activation of somatosensory areas were induced from the pressure and heat stimulation. The developed pressure and heat stimulator is expected to be utilized for future intra- and interdigit fMRI studies on pressure and heat stimulation.  相似文献

Using the Commodore PET as a random pulse generator, an inexpensive visual stimulator for psychophysical experiments can easily be made at low cost. The PIA interface that connects the external experimental devices is easily accessed by PEEKing and POKEing its registers with BASIC. Using pulse motors, two independent stimulator wheels, having 24 different color filters and a 2.4 log (.1 log unit steps) unit range light attenuator, are controlled by a randomized string of pulses via a PIA port, and the responses of the observer as well as the stimulus parameters are automatically written onto the cassette memory for further data analysis.  相似文献

A constant-current stimulator delivering biphasic pulses was designed and constructed for whole-animal shocking during aversive conditioning of Pleurobrartchaea, a marine gastropod mollusk used for behavioral and neurophysiological research. The advantages of whole-animal stimulation are discussed and results are briefly described with regard to the factors involved in evaluating the procedure. The circuit design and electrode considerations are presented in detail. The basic stimulator design has potential for use as a general instrument for behavioral and physiological research.  相似文献

Four groups of rats, one of which served as a normal, nonoperated group, were used. The other three groups were operated and fitted with an electrode carrier of eight electrodes of varying lengths arranged in a 7.5 mm X 5 mm rectangle. About 10 or 12 days after surgery, the following groups of animals underwent a 14-day regimen wherein each animal spent 15 min in a deep, metal, electrically insulated cylinder: Group A, normal, nonoperated group, with no intervention; Group B, stimulated each day with 45 trains of rectangular biphasic pulses (3 trains per min) at the rate of 20 pulses per second (pps); Group C, the same but at the rate of 100 pps; Group D, the same but 180 pps. After a 48-hr fast and without benefit of shaping, each animal was placed for 60 min in a lever-pressing device and was rewarded with a pellet after each three to four presses. The resulting performance curves showed no improvement in pressing rate for Group A; marginal improvement for Group B; definite improvement for Group C; and the greatest improvement for Group D, the terminal rate being almost twice that of Group C.  相似文献

We have previously identified categorical individual differences in the occurrence of temporal brightness enhancement (TBE) by using a simultaneous brightness discrimination paradigm (Bowen & Markell, 1980).TBE is a nonmonotonic relation between brightness and pulse duration, pulses of intermediate duration (75–125 msec) can appear brighter than longer or shorter pulses of the same luminance. Three classes of observers can be defined based on whether they perceive TBE under one of two conditions of temporal asynchrony between a short test pulse and a longer (500 msec) comparison pulse:simultaneous onset of the pulses orsimultaneous offset. Type A observers show TBE for both asynchrony conditions; Type B observers show the effect for simultaneous offset but not simultaneous onset; Type C observers do not show TBE for either asynchrony. In the present study, we show that Type A and Type C observers maintain a constant brightness-duration relation as the asynchrony between test and comparison pulses is varied from simultaneous onset to simultaneous offset. Type B observers show a gradual shift in the brightness-duration relation as asynchrony changes. In a separate experiment, we find that practice has little effect on Type A and Type B observers but that Type C observers may change in classification to Types A and B over as few as five experimental sessions. The hypothesis that individual differences are due to differential “weighting” of chromatic (sustained) and achromatic (transient) visual channels is discussed.  相似文献

For this study, we developed a magnetic resonance (MR)-compatible vibrotactile stimulator using a planar-coil-type actuator. The newly developed vibrotactile stimulator consists of three units: control unit, drive unit, and planar-coil-type actuator. The control unit controls frequency, intensity, time, and channel, and transfers the stimulation signals to the drive unit. The drive unit operates the planar-coil-type actuator in response to commands from the control unit. The planar-coil-type actuator, which uses a planar coil instead of conventional electric wire, generates vibrating stimulation through interaction of the current of the planar coil with the static magnetic field of the MR scanner. Even though the developed tactile stimulating system is small, simple, and inexpensive, it has a wide range of stimulation frequencies (20 ~ 400 Hz, at 40 levels) and stimulation intensities (0 ~ 7 V, at 256 levels). The stimulation intensity does not change due to frequency changes. Since the transient response time is a few microseconds, the stimulation time can be controlled on a scale of microseconds. In addition, this actuator has the advantages of providing highly repeatable stimulation, being durable, being able to assume various shapes, and having an adjustable contact area with the skin. The new stimulator operated stably in an MR environment without affecting the MR images. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we observed the brain activation changes resulting from stimulation frequency and intensity changes.  相似文献

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be used to mask visual stimuli, disrupting visual task performance or preventing visual awareness. While TMS masking studies generally fix stimulation intensity, we hypothesized that varying the intensity of TMS pulses in a masking paradigm might inform several ongoing debates concerning TMS disruption of vision as measured subjectively versus objectively, and pre-stimulus (forward) versus post-stimulus (backward) TMS masking. We here show that both pre-stimulus TMS pulses and post-stimulus TMS pulses could strongly mask visual stimuli. We found no dissociations between TMS effects on the subjective and objective measures of vision for any masking window or intensity, ruling out the option that TMS intensity levels determine whether dissociations between subjective and objective vision are obtained. For the post-stimulus time window particularly, we suggest that these data provide new constraints for (e.g. recurrent) models of vision and visual awareness. Finally, our data are in line with the idea that pre-stimulus masking operates differently from conventional post-stimulus masking.  相似文献

Summary The ability of subjects with a right-hand or left-hand preference to report accurately the number of tactile pulses in temporal sequences presented to preferred and nonpreferred hands was investigated as a function of temporal pattern complexity which varied in terms of intrinsic temporal relations among successive pulses and ranged from slow regular (periodic) sequences of small numbers of pulses to fast irregular (aperiodic) sequences of large numbers of pulses. As the complexity of the pattern increased in terms of pulse number, presentation rate, pulse density, and pulse aperiodicity, all subjects, for both preferred- and nonpreferred-hand stimulation, were increasingly less accurate in reporting the number of pulses in a temporal pattern. Most interesting was the finding that although hand-preference groups did not differ reliably in overall report accuracy, both groups showed a consistent shift in report accuracy from preferred- to nonpreferred-hand stimulation when patterns had more than seven pulses; furthermore, these shifts occurred for all presentation rates and pulse periodicities. A possible relationship between hand preference and cerebral psychological organization is suggested and the data are discussed in terms of the laterality differences reflecting basic underlying cerebral asymmetries in stimulus processing.These investigations were supported by Grant A8621 from the National Research Council of Canada. When brightness-pulse duration relations are studied with a simultaneous brightness discrimination procedure, three classes of observers emerge (Bowen & Markell, 1980). These classes are defined by whether or not observers perceive temporal brightness enhancement (the Broca-Sulzer effect) under two asynchrony conditions for pulses to be compared: simultaneous onset and simultaneous offset. Type A observers perceive brightness enhancement for both asynchrony conditions; Type B observers perceive brightness enhancement for simultaneous offset of pulses but not for simultaneous onset; Type C observers do not generate the Broca-Sulzer effect under either asynchrony condition. Here we present supplementary measures on observers of all three types: (1) magnitude estimation of the brightness of single pulses of light of varying duration, (2) modulation sensitivity for sin~wave flicker, and (3) contrast sensitivity for moving sine-wave gratings. The magnitude estimation data differentiated the three types of observers, but flicker and motion sensitivity did not. The three classes of observers probably differ in the perceptual criteria they employ in judging the brightness of isolated pulses of light; they probably do not differ in their underlying neurophysiological responses.  相似文献

In previous studies, we have measured individual differences in simultaneous brightness discrimination between a long-duration (500 msec or more) comparison pulse and a set of briefer test pulses of the same luminance. Some observers judge the comparison pulse to be brighter than all test pulses in a range from 20 to 320 msec. Other observers exhibittemporal brightness enhancement: a test pulse of 80 msec for our stimulus conditions is judged brighter than the comparison pulse. Individual differences depend upon the temporal asynchrony between test and comparison pulses. Observers designated Type A show temporal brightness enhancement for both simultaneous onset of test and comparison pulse and for simultaneous offset of the pulses. Type B observers exhibit brightness enhancement for simultaneous offset of pulses but not for simultaneous onset. Type C observers do not exhibit brightness enhancement effects. Here we use both short (80 msec) and long (640 msec) pulses as the comparison stimuli. We replicate our previous pattern of individual differences for the long comparison stimulus. For the short comparison stimulus, brightness discrimination functions for the three classes of observers are exactly predicted from the patterns obtained with the conventional long comparison pulse. This confirms the generality of individual differences in pulse brightness perception and shows that they do not depend upon the particular stimulus conditions selected for the discrimination task.  相似文献

In this study, we developed a tactile stimulator capable of administering either puff- or suction-type stimuli. The system is composed of three parts: a control unit, an air-handling unit, and a stimulation unit. The control unit controls the type, intensity, and time of stimulation. The air-handling unit delivers the stimulation power quantitatively to the stimulation unit, as commanded by the control unit. The stimulation unit stably administers either type of pressure to the skin, without any change of the tactor. Although the design of the stimulator is simple, it allows for five levels of control of the stimulation intensity (2–6 psi) and 0.1-s steps of control of the stimulation time, as we confirmed by tests. Preliminary electroencephalographic and event-related potential (ERP) studies of our system in humans confirmed the presence of N100 and P300 waves at standard electrode position C3, which are related to perception and cognition, respectively, in the somatosensory area of the brain. In addition, different stimulation types (puff and suction) and intensities (2 and 6 psi) were reflected in different peak-to-peak amplitudes and slopes of the mean ERP signal. The system developed in this study is expected to contribute to human tactile studies by providing the ability to administer puff- or suction-type stimuli interchangeably.  相似文献

How brief must a sound be before its pitch is no longer perceived? The uncertainty tradeoff between temporal and spectral resolution (Gabor’s principle) limits the minimum duration required for accurate pitch identification or discrimination. Prior studies have reported that pitch can be extracted from sinusoidal pulses as brief as half a cycle. This finding has been used in a number of classic papers to develop models of pitch encoding. We have found that phase randomization, which eliminates timbre confounds, degrades this ability to chance, raising serious concerns over the foundation on which classic pitch models have been built. The current study investigated whether subthreshold pitch cues may still exist in partial-cycle pulses revealed through statistical integration in a time series containing multiple pulses. To this end, we measured frequency-discrimination thresholds in a two-interval forced-choice task for trains of partial-cycle random-phase tone pulses. We found that residual pitch cues exist in these pulses but discriminating them requires an order of magnitude (ten times) larger frequency difference than that reported previously, necessitating a re-evaluation of pitch models built on earlier findings. We also found that as pulse duration is decreased to less than two cycles its pitch becomes biased toward higher frequencies, consistent with predictions of an auto-correlation model of pitch extraction.  相似文献

In different sessions, the interstimulus interval (ISI) was selected from the range 175 to 825 msec in steps of 25 msec, with different ISI values presented in a random order. Across this range of ISI conditions, interresponse intervals (IRIs) exhibited alternating positive bias (too slow) and negative bias (too fast). We interpret this pattern of bias in terms of a discrete, or categorical, timing mechanism in motor timing. Categorical time production can be viewed as extending our conception of the timekeeper in Wing's (Wing & Kristofferson, 1973a, 1973b) two-process model of motor timing and may be related to the system of multiple clocks proposed by Kristofferson (1980) to explain a categorical pattern of variability measures in duration discrimination.  相似文献

De Houwer and Beckers (in press, Experiment 1) recently demonstrated that ratings about the relation between a target cue T2 and an outcome are higher when training involves CT1+ and T1T2+ followed by C+ trials than when training involves CT1+ and T1T2+ followed by C- trials. We replicated this study but now explicitly asked participants to rate the causal status of the cues both before and after the C+ or C- trials. Results showed that causal ratings for T2 were significantly higher after C+ trials than before C+ trials and that T2 received significantly lower ratings after C- trials than before C- trials. The results thus provide the first evidence for higher-order unovershadowing and higher-order backward blocking. In addition, the ratings for T1 revealed that first-order backward blocking (i.e., decrease in ratings for T1 as the result of C+ trials) was stronger than first-order unovershadowing (i.e., increase in ratings for T1 as the result of C- trials).  相似文献

Touching three thermal stimulators with the first, second, and third fingers of the hand revealed the following phenomena: (1) When the outer two stimulators were warm (or cold) and the center stimulator thermally neutral, warmth (or cold) was felt at all three fingers (referral). (2) When all three stimulators were warm (or cold), the magnitude of warmth (or cold) felt at the middle finger was greater than the sensation felt when the center stimulator alone was touched (enhancement). (3) When the thermal qualities of the center and outer stimulators differed, the sensation at the middle finger often took on the quality of the sensation produced at the outer fingers (domination). (4)Synthetic heat was sometimes experienced when the outer stimulators were warmed and the center stimulator cooled. The results raise interesting possibilities concerning the probable role that tactile stimulation plays in thermal localization.  相似文献

A device is described which has 10 input and 2 output lines. Grounding an input causes a pulse with a specific amplitude, polarity, and duration to appear on one of the output lines. Pulse parameters can be set by front-panel controls. Thus, 10 distinct events can be coded by associating a unique pulse with each event. These pulses can be recorded on one (or two) channels of a magnetic tape recorder for subsequent processing. The use of this coder in the study of event-related potentials is described.  相似文献

We consider the possibility that, in a duration discrimination task involving very short empty time intervals, T and T + ?T, bounded by brief auditory pulses, there may be a critical value of the base duration T within the range 50–300 msec below which duration is coded on the basis of sensory interactions between the markers which bound the interval. With ?T fixed at 10 msec, the functional relation between performance and base duration was determined under three levels of marker intensity. Changing the intensity by 37 dB resulted in the same small change in performance at the shortest base duration (50 msec), where it is most likely that an intensity-dependent interaction could be present, as was obtained at the longest base duration (250 msec), where such an interaction should be minimally effective as a cue for duration discrimination. The code for the duration of an empty auditory interval greater than 50 msee probably is not dorived from energy-dependent processes.  相似文献

Recent neuroendocrinology research has pointed out that testosterone (T) and cortisol (C) changes after social interactions can predict risk‐taking behavior in decision‐making, depending on the sex of participants. However, previous research has focused on the effects of the changes in only one hormone, rather than the interaction between them, even though C can suppress T activity. Our aim was to test, in men and women, the role of T changes moderated by C changes after competition in decision‐making. Thus, 48 males and 46 females completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) after a laboratory competition or a noncompetitive task (control task). Saliva samples were collected before and after the competition/control task. IGT was employed to measure risk‐taking decision‐making, considering the degree of uncertainty. Our results showed sex‐differentiated effects of T and C changes on risk‐taking behavior. On the one hand, men from both task groups (Competition/Control) who had higher C and T changes after competition showed more risk‐taking decision‐making (higher IG Risk). On the other hand, women from the competitive task who had high C and T showed conservative decision‐making. Therefore, these results show sex‐differentiated decision‐making profiles, which would help to understand how men and women behave after experiencing a competitive social context.  相似文献
