Young people who participate in group counseling need help in understanding the goals of the group because these goals may otherwise act as hidden agenda items and because they have no norms for understanding whether or not the group is functioning effectively. A three-step process described here is designed to increase member commitment and understanding of the group: first, a self-selection process, second, an intake interview procedure, and third, a discussion of sharing goals.  相似文献

The authors provide a comprehensive survey of the research literature on pretherapy training for group psychotherapy. The twenty studies identified during the twenty-five-year period 1962-1987 were fraught with various methodological and design inadequacies. Despite the widespread positive endorsement found in the clinical literature, the research evidence for the benefit of pretherapy training is not particularly impressive. While there is evidence of certain immediate effects (e.g., improved attendance), results concerning process and outcome effects are, at best, only suggestive. In the face of the disappointing findings, the authors are nonetheless optimistic regarding the potential value of pretherapy training.  相似文献

A group leader is one who assumes the responsibility for a group dealing with interpersonal relationships. The leader is committed to a belief in the dignity and personal worth of each member of a group with whom he works. While demanding the freedom to function as a professional, he also accepts the responsibilities this freedom implies and defends the rights and freedom of his group members. He maintains integrity in his relationships with other professionals and the public. He does not use his specialized knowledge to take personal advantage of group members, nor does he permit himself to be used by others for purposes inconsistent with his own ethical standards. The group leader is expected to abide by and practice the ethical standards of the American Psychological Association and the American Personnel and Guidance Association. He is also expected to practice the following ethical standards that were developed for, and are more directly applicable to, working with groups.  相似文献

This article highlights the clinical progress of three long-term psychotherapy groups for children with pervasive developmental disorders. Unique aspects of working with such children are addressed as well as their movement through the phases of group development. Clinical observations suggested that these groups did in fact pass through observable phases of cohesion, differentiation, and intimacy. Further, these children demonstrated noticeable social development both inside and outside the groups. They identified strongly with their groups, and after the settling-in period, there was remarkably little resistance to participation, especially given the children's tendencies for social avoidance. Vignettes are provided to illustrate both group developmental phases and noteworthy psychological experiences of the clinical process with children who have been diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorders.  相似文献

Self-affirmation theory proposes that people can respond to threats to the self by affirming alternative sources of self-integrity, resulting in greater openness to self-threatening information. The present research examines this at a group level by investigating whether a group affirmation (affirming an important group value) increases acceptance of threatening group information among sports teams and fans. In Study 1, athletes exhibited a group-serving attributional bias, which was eliminated by the group affirmation. In Study 2, the most highly identified fans exhibited the most bias in terms of their attributions, and this bias was eliminated by the group affirmation. These studies suggest that groups can serve as resources from which people can draw in response to threatening group events.  相似文献

Much interest has been focused on Gestalt therapy in recent years. Many counselors, however, are unfamiliar with this style of therapeutic intervention. The author offers a brief introduction to some of the basic tenets of Gestalt therapy, noting goals that are similar to those in counseling theories. He also suggests several interventions from Gestalt therapy to be considered for group counseling and discusses their applications.  相似文献

Postnatal depression has been estimated to affect as many as 30% of childbearing women. Emerging evidence offers reason to believe that psychoanalytically-oriented group treatment may be beneficial for some women with postnatal depression. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of one model of analytic group therapy for this clinical population. Our findings suggest that the women had a positive response to the group treatment. The particulars of the psychoanalytic group approach, here referred to as relational-developmental, are described in detail and an analysis is offered about why this approach may be beneficial. Also discussed are limitations of the research design and suggestions for studying a relational-developmental group-centered prevention program for children at-risk from postnatal depression.  相似文献
