Changes in palatability of tastes and flavours as a result of flavour preference conditioning were examined. In Experiment 1, when tastes were paired with glucose in a reverse-order differential conditioning paradigm, rats acquired conditioned preferences for CS + and displayed more hedonic responses to CS + than to CS - in a postconditioning taste reactivity test. In Experiment 2, rats that received oral infusions of flavours as CSs during a reverse-order conditioning procedure expressed both palatability shifts and conditioned preferences for CS + . Rats that received a forward conditioning procedure acquired a preference for CS + , but the palatability of CS + was unchanged. In Experiment 3, hungry rats drank mixtures of a flavour CS and a calorific or sweet tasting reinforcer in a long-exposure conditioning paradigm. When tested hungry, rats preferred CS + whether they had acquired flavour-calorie or flavour-taste associations. However, CS + became more palatable only for rats that acquired flavour-calorie associations. These results suggest that acquisition of flavour preferences, as measured by 2-bottle tests, may not always be accompanied by enhanced palatability.  相似文献

Previous failures to condition preferences for the unacceptable taste cues sucrose octaacetate (SOA) and citric acid (CA) using a reverse-order, differential conditioning procedure (Forestell & LoLordo, 2000) may have been the result of low consumption of the taste cues in training or of their relatively low acceptability to rats that are thirsty and hungry. In the present study, rats that were thirsty but not hungry readily consumed the SOA and CA conditioned stimulus solutions in training. In test, stronger preferences were displayed for CS+ if the taste cues had been mixed in water (i.e., for the previously unacceptable taste cues) than if they had been made more acceptable by the addition of saccharin in training and test. In Experiment 2, again with rats that were thirsty but not hungry, stronger preferences for CS+ were observed when taste cues were presented in water in the test than when they were presented in saccharin. Addition of saccharin to the taste cues in test eliminated the preference for CS+.  相似文献

Although empirical research on aesthetics has had some success in explaining the average preferences of groups of observers, relatively little is known about individual differences in preference, and especially about how such differences might covary across different domains. In this study, we identified a new factor underlying aesthetic response—preference for harmonious stimuli—and examined how it varies over four domains (color, shape, spatial location, and music) across individuals with different levels of training in art and music. We found that individual preferences for harmony are strongly correlated across all four dimensions tested and decrease consistently with training in the relevant aesthetic domains. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that cross-domain preference for harmony is well-represented as a single, unified factor, with effects separate from those of training and of common personality measures.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to explore the role of social preference and perceived acceptance as moderators of the relation between child temperament and externalizing behavior. Participants included 399 children evaluated at pre-kindergarten and kindergarten assessments. Pre-kindergarten children characterized by high temperamental Surgency/Extraversion were more likely to exhibit hyperactivity and aggression in the kindergarten classroom. In addition, kindergarten perceived acceptance and social preference moderated the relation between pre-kindergarten Surgency/Extraversion and kindergarten hyperactivity for girls only. Girls who were characterized by high temperamental Surgency/Extraversion, high perceived acceptance, and low social preference were at risk for higher levels of teacher-reported and peer-nominated hyperactivity. In contrast, accurately high perceived acceptance was a protective factor for high temperamental Surgency/Extraversion. Findings are discussed in terms of risk and protective factors for externalizing behavior.  相似文献

In this article, the author investigates sex differences in preferences for various job factors which college students consider important in their job selection decisions. The results showed that while college students have stronge differences in their preferences, these differences are not stereotypically male or female. Overall, both male and female college students are primarily looking for jobs in which they can learn, accomplish something worthwhile, and work with friendly and congenial co-workers. Furthermore, having knowledge regarding the extent to which a company demonstrates broad social concern is not among the most important criteria used by students when making their decisions.  相似文献

Heritability estimates for sucrose, lactose, and sodium chloride taste preferences were uniformly low in a sample of 311 monozygotic and like-sex dizygotic twin pairs between 9 and 15 years of age. Black children preferred more concentrated solutions of all three tastants than did Caucasian children. This effect was independent of socioeconomic status in the total sample. Males preferred more concentrated solutions of sucrose and lactose than did females- but there were no sex differences in sodium chloride preference. The possibility that early intake experiences may play a role in the determination of enduring taste preferences in Homo sapiens is discussed.  相似文献

Taste profiles were obtained for 26 compounds after adaptation to distilled water and also for water after adaptation to each of the 26 compounds. Each of the four “basic tastes” was induced in water by adaptation to certain of the compounds. Compounds having similar tastes did not necessarily have similar water tastes. Bruno and Cutting (1988) varied four monocular cues to perceived depth in a factorial design. Subjects judged the distance between test objects. Given main effects in the analysis of variance, the authors concluded that the perceivers integrated the four different sources of information, as opposed to simply selecting a single source. Given no interactions in the analysis of variance, the authors concluded that the integration process was additive rather than multiplicative. The ambiguity inherent in Bruno and Cutting's experiments and analyses is discussed. As presented, their results did not provide evidence for integration of depth cues or evidence for additivity, independence, and parallel processing of the cues. An additional analysis of the distribution of the rating judgments given by their subjects, however, provides some evidence for integration of the cues. The fuzzy logical model of perception (FLMP) is extended to describe perceptual recognition of depth. The model assumes independence of the cues during feature evaluation and a nonadditive integration process in which the least ambiguous cues have the greatest impact on the judgment. The FLMP is contrasted with a model assuming additivity of the cues. Because both models describe the results equally well, it remains for future researchers to provide definitive tests between the models.  相似文献

Rats have been shown to avoid consuming a flavor, but prefer a location, previously paired with amphetamine or morphine. A series of 4 experiments evaluated the hedonic properties of amphetamine and morphine in the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus), an insectivore that (unlike rats) is capable of vomiting when exposed to toxins. Unlike rats, amphetamine (20 mg/kg) and morphine (20 mg/kg) produced both a conditioned sucrose (0.3 M) and saccharin (0.1%) preference in shrews (administered intraperitoneally), when measured by both a 1- and a 2-bottle test. At the same dose, both drugs also produced a place preference in shrews. These results suggest that the potential of rewarding drugs to produce taste avoidance may vary on the basis of the ability of the species to vomit.  相似文献

It is well established that newborns prefer some sounds over others. It is widely believed that these preferences reflect past experience, either prenatally or in the immediate postnatal environment. However, it is also possible that structural factors are involved. The frequency of occurrence of different sounds in the languages of the world may provide evidence of such structural factors. If structural factors are important, and if frequency of occurrence of sounds in the world’s languages reflects structural factors, then we might expect newborn preference for sounds to reflect their frequency across languages. In this study, newborns were presented with two cv pairs consisting of a trilled /r/ and a bunched /r/ followed by the vowel //. The newborns were either of English‐speaking or Spanish‐speaking origin. The bunched /r/ occurs in American English and is not frequent in the languages of the world. It does not occur in Spanish. The trilled /r/ occurs in Spanish and is a frequent consonant in the languages of the world. It does not occur in American English. Results showed that newborns of both linguistic backgrounds preferred to listen to the trilled /r/. It is hypothesized that the frequency of occurrence of a sound in the languages of the world may reflect structurally based ease of production and ease of perception, the latter leading to the newborn preference.  相似文献

55 healthy infants were assessed for their developmental and behavioral patterns at the age of 9 mo. Hand preference was assessed at 20 mo. of age. The distribution of hand preference showed 12 were right-handed, 11 left-handed and 23 ambidextrous. This distribution appears shifted more to the left than that reported for older children. Although their data were based on different tests not appropriate for 9-mo.-old infants, ambidexterity appeared to reflect part of the hand-preference continuum. No significant relationship between hand preference and developmental attainments was noted. Perhaps a larger sample would provide a clear developmental behavioral pattern and hand preference in infancy.  相似文献

The debate over whether infants prefer a familiar stimulus over a novel stimulus has persisted for over 30 years, and there is evidence which supports both sides of the question. However, the research which supports the preference for the familiar uses different measures than that which supports the preference for novelty. In the first experiment, the preference for the familiar was tested by making one stimulus more familiar than the others presented. A target of a ‘familiar’ face was presented eight times more frequently than the other faces. During the experiment, the infants could choose at which face they looked and for how long. It was found that the infants significantly preferred the familiar face over any one of the novel faces, especially when the familiar face was presented first. Substituting auditory for visual stimuli, the second experiment was a replication of the first experiment. Consonant–vowel syllables were used instead of faces. Overall, 17 stimuli were used: one repeating ‘familiar’ sound, and 16 novel sounds. It was found that the infants significantly preferred the familiar sound over any of the novel sounds. As found in Experiment 1, the infants also had a greater preference for the familiar sound when it was presented first.  相似文献

This article discusses the ethical and methodological issues associated with boredom experienced by human participants during psychological experiments. Ways are suggested in which informed consent, briefing, and debriefing can be used to prevent or remedy boredom induced during experiments. We address methodological and ethical concerns, and we discuss the advantages of the proposed approach for experimenters' practice and training of undergraduate students. Future directions for much needed research on these topics are also emphasized.  相似文献
