MEASURING THE DYNAMIC PATTERNS OF DEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF ASIA 1949-1968

The research reported here is a first step toward the building of a general theory of development in Asia. The specific goals involved are: (1) to delineate major patterns of development in Asia; (2) to examine the fluctuation of each nation's pattern scores; and (3) to evaluate trends in Asia as a system.     

Arthur Kronfeld (1886-1941)--a psychiatrist in the service of psychotherapy

The psychotherapeutic life-work of psychiatrist Arthur Kronfeld has almost fallen into oblivion. Against the background of the 100th anniversary of his birth the author traces Kronfeld's psychotherapeutic career, pointing out his activity at the Berliner "Institute of Sexual Research" under Magnus Hirschfeld, and his psychotherapeutic concept--the psychagogic guidance of the patient--and its connection with the individual psychology of Alfred Adler. Kronfeld translated his theoretical positions into activities directed towards socialization and the teachability of psychotherapy which are still worthy of note by those engaged in the field.     

Boring Infinite Descent

In formal ontology, infinite regresses are generally considered a bad sign. One debate where such regresses come into play is the debate about fundamentality. Arguments in favour of some type of fundamentalism are many, but they generally share the idea that infinite chains of ontological dependence must be ruled out. Some motivations for this view are assessed in this article, with the conclusion that such infinite chains may not always be vicious. Indeed, there may even be room for a type of fundamentalism combined with infinite descent as long as this descent is “boring,” that is, the same structure repeats ad infinitum. A start is made in the article towards a systematic account of this type of infinite descent. The philosophical prospects and scientific tenability of the account are briefly evaluated using an example from physics.

法国1968年5月运动给予福柯行动的机会和思索的资源。他以这次运动为对象和参照,进一步完善了自己的权力理论和革命理论,回应了人们对“新哲学家”和“新政治”的呼唤。福柯以微观权力为对象,分析了现代社会的规训机制,试图以此探讨现代社会的反抗策略。对于革命,福柯始终怀有极大的热忱,但他在1968年5月运动中的行动表明,福柯在本质上是一个新的无政府主义者。
