THE EFFECT OF TASK - DIFFICULTY ON THE OCCURRENCE OF THE IOR

Two experiments about the inhibition of return were studied with college students as the subjects. A cue-target paradigm was used. Experiment I showed the inhibition of return at cue-target SOA of 300ms in simple detection tasks while in discrimination tasks SOA of 700ms was required. In the choice tasks of Experiment II, the inhibition of return emerged at SOA of 1300ms. These results suggested that the more difficult the task was, the later the inhibition of return appeared. In different tasks, the cognitive operations and the complexities of the operations were different. Because different tasks required different attentional resources, the cues, which were indexes of task difficulty, attracted different attentional resources. If the task was more difficult, more attention was held in the cued position and left it later, so the IOR appeared later. The task difficulty was an important factor that influenced the temporal dynamics of the inhibition of return.
