Spatial Iconicity Affects Semantic Relatedness Judgment

The research examined the role of spatial iconicity in semantic relatedness judgment.The subjects made speeded decisions of whether the members of a simultaneously presented word pair were semantically related.The words were presented vertically or horizontally,either in an iconic relation with their referents or in a reverse iconic relation.Experiment 1,in which words denoting substantive objects were used as the stimulus,indicated the reverse-iconic condition yielded significantly slower semantic-relatedness judgments than did the iconic condition.Experiment 2,in which words denoting parts of larger objects were used as the stimuli,found that the vertical iconic condition facilitated semantic-relatedness judgments.The current findings showed that the similarity between the spatial arrangement of words and that of their referents affected semantic judgments,which supported the perceptual symbol system.
