Abstract:
Boys (N = 97) and girls (N = 96) from kindergarten through sixth grade were asked to select toys and occupations under one of the following three instructional sets: (1) choose for a girl, (2) choose for a boy, (3) choose the best one. Results indicated that children made selections for boys and girls which were in accordance with culturally accepted stereotypes. However, children's selections of the best toys and occupations were more sex-typed in the masculine direction for boys than in the feminine direction for girls. In addition, as children grew older, their choices of occupations, but not of toys, became more sex-typed. These results were discussed in terms of implications for self and career development.
