Confessing the Faith: The Starting Point for Zwingli and Bullinger |
| |
Abstract: | AbstractBullinger is often portrayed as the successor of Zwingli, both historically and theologically. This does justice to the kinship and continuity in their theology, but not to the various differences. A comparison of two confessional statements by each is revealing. We focus here on the opening articles, in particular the doctrine of God and the place of Scripture and the Fathers. For Zwingli, we consider Account of the Faith (1530) and Exposition of the Faith (1531), and for Bullinger, the First Helvetic Confession (1536) and the Second Helvetic Confession (1566).1 |
