The article deals with phenomenology in Lithuania. The main thesis of the article is this: phenomenology is a living tradition
in need of both development and interpretation. The minor thesis follows from the main one: the Western phenomenological tradition
and Lithuanian philosophy interact and develop in tandem with one another. According to the authors, the contact between poetics
and philosophy is the dominant form of phenomenology in Lithuania. The phenomenological tradition is treated as creative and
living philosophical thought.

The article examines the reception of Western philosophy in Lithuanian philosophy of religion. The purpose is to show how
the discourse of philosophy of religion came about in Lithuania. This branch of philosophy has been not only culturally and
socially important in Lithuania, it has been significant as well for the formation and maintenance of national identity. By
the same token, it also was the most developed and controversial theoretically. The first part of the article lays out the
genesis of the autonomous Lithuanian philosophy of religion, though strongly influenced by the transformations in the broader
context of European philosophy. For that reason it will be useful to present the ideas of the most prominent Lithuanian thinkers
in the field who have successfully adopted and adapted vital trends in Western philosophy into the Lithuanian cultural and
intellectual context. The second part of the article is less historical and more problematic as it deals with specific issues
concerning faith, God, anthropological problems as reflected in the works of contemporary Lithuanian philosophers of religion.
Only after having explored certain affiliations of Lithuanian philosophy of religion with Western thought can we state that,
although the latter was the necessary precondition of the former, Lithuanian philosophy of religion does substantiate its
sovereign status while correlating in an original way major cultural transformations with the changes in theoretical context,
according to the specific concerns of Lithuanian society. In addition, this historical and philosophical examination aims
to look at the formation of Lithuanian identity, mentality, values, their roots in the Christian tradition as well as the
capacity to respond at critical historical moments.

The first Lithuanians to be introduced to philosophy were young members of the gentry who studied in European universities
at the end of the 14th century. The recently christened Lithuania strove to adopt Western culture and to present itself as
a Western state. At the end of the 14th century, the Vilnius Cathedral School was founded. The elements of logic were probably
taught there. The growth of the political and economic power of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania brought about the need for higher
education. The need was significantly increased by the growing activity of various religious orders. In 1507, the Dominicans
started teaching philosophy and theology to their novices in Vilnius. They taught late medieval philosophy in its Thomistic
interpretation. We can regard 1507 as the year Lithuania began to benefit from a new phenomenon, professional philosophy,
with the Dominicans as its initiators. The Dominicans and later the Jesuits, Franciscans, Benedictines, Carmelites, Trinitarians,
and other monastic orders enriched intellectual life in Lithuania by teaching philosophy in their schools. The most important
event in the development of philosophy in Lithuania was the foundation of Vilnius University in 1579. The disciplines belonging
to scholasticism of the second level were taught in its philosophy department.

Experimental philosophy and philosophical intuition 总被引:4,自引:3,他引:1
Ernest Sosa 《Philosophical Studies》2007,132(1):99-107
The topic is experimental philosophy as a naturalistic movement, and its bearing on the value of intuitions in philosophy.
This paper explores first how the movement might bear on philosophy more generally, and how it might amount to something novel
and promising. Then it turns to one accomplishment repeatedly claimed for it already: namely, the discrediting of armchair
intuitions as used in philosophy.

By taking into account dissident/political and art historical interpretations of Soviet art, I analyze how polemics about
totalitarianism in the West, which generally corresponded with Cold War debates and Eastern European dissident thought, shaped the post-Soviet
evaluations of national artistic legacies. It is argued that the political relationship with the totalitarian past, like in
many post-socialist areas where the immediate past was subjected to radical re-evaluation, affected Lithuanian artists’ and
critics’ attitude towards local Soviet art. Because of an obvious lack of underground art in Soviet Lithuania, however, the
retrospective usage of political categories here became problematic. Especially in international representations, the complexities
of artists’ relationship with officialdom came to be routinely assigned to the phenomenon of non-conformism; this eventually
obfuscated the differences between the Lithuanian Soviet art context as somewhat different from the Russian case.

The approach that philosophers have taken to history has too often been one-dimensional. It is my aim in this paper to map
out a future multi-dimensional philosophy of history, by invoking the notion of a relation with the past, and by arguing for
the philosophical relevance of multiple such relations.

Harry Collins interprets Hubert Dreyfus’s philosophy of embodiment as a criticism of all possible forms of artificial intelligence.
I argue that this characterization is inaccurate and predicated upon a misunderstanding of the relevance of phenomenology
for empirical scientific research.

The place of philosophy in Iranian society is prominent. Philosophy is discussed in popular media as well as specialized journals,
and in seminaries, research centers, and universities. Philosophy in Iran is often divided into Western and Islamic. Sometimes
these are taken to be rivals. The methods of instruction differ to some extent, as well as the languages needed for advanced
study. The question of the nature of Islamic philosophy is itself a controversial topic in Iran, and positions on this issue
are often driven by ideological trends. The study of philosophy in the Islamic seminaries has its own history. Today Islamic
philosophy may be considered a philosophical tradition that is being carried on with increasing interaction with the study
of Western philosophy in Iran.

In this introduction we discuss the motivation behind the workshop “Towards a New Epistemology of Mathematics” of which this
special issue constitutes the proceedings. We elaborate on historical and empirical aspects of the desired new epistemology,
connect it to the public image of mathematics, and give a summary and an introduction to the contributions to this issue.

After the problems of epistemology, the most fundamental problem of Islamic philosophy is that of causality. Causality has
been studied from various perspectives. This paper endeavors first to analyze the issues of causality in Islamic philosophy
and then to critique them. A sketch is provided of the history of the development of theories of causality in Islamic philosophy,
with particular attention to how religious considerations came to determine the shape of the philosophical theories that were
accepted. It is suggested that outstanding philosophical and theological problems that have plagued the tradition of Islamic
philosophy require a new approach to the issue of causality.

This paper offers an exposition of Husserl's mature philosophy of mathematics, expounded for the first time in Logische Untersuchungen
and maintained without any essential change throughout the rest of his life. It is shown that Husserl's views on mathematics
were strongly influenced by Riemann, and had clear affinities with the much later Bourbaki school.

Relatively little is known about the factor structure of disruptive behavior among preadolescent girls. The present study
reports on exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of disruptive girl behavior over four successive data waves as rated
by parents and teachers in a large, representative community sample of girls (N = 2,451). Five factors were identified from parent ratings (oppositional behavior/conduct problems, inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity,
relational aggression, and callous-unemotional behaviors), and four factors were identified derived from teacher ratings (oppositional
behavior/conduct problems/callous-unemotional behaviors, inattention, hyperactivityimpulsivity, and relational aggression).
There was a high degree of consistency of items loading on equivalent factors across parent and teacher ratings. Year-to-year
stability of factors between ages five and 12 was high for parent ratings (ICC = 0.70 to 0.88), and slightly lower for teacher
ratings (ICC = 0.56 to 0.83). These findings are discussed in terms of possible adjustment to the criteria for children's
disruptive behavior disorders found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.

Non-actual model systems discussed in scientific theories are compared to fictions in literature. This comparison may help
with the understanding of similarity relations between models and real-world target systems. The ontological problems surrounding
fictions in science may be particularly difficult, however. A comparison is also made to ontological problems that arise in
the philosophy of mathematics.

Facet-like Structures in Computer Science 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Uta Priss 《Axiomathes》2008,18(2):243-255
This paper discusses how facet-like structures occur as a commonplace feature in a variety of computer science disciplines
as a means for structuring class hierarchies. The paper then focuses on a mathematical model for facets (and class hierarchies
in general), called formal concept analysis, and discusses graphical representations of faceted systems based on this model.

Kant’s reputation for making absolutist claims about universal and necessary conditions for the possibility of experience
are put here in the broader context of his goals for the Critical philosophy. It is shown that within that context, Kant’s
claims can be seen as considerably more innocuous than they are traditionally regarded, underscoring his deep respect for
“common sense” and sharing surprisingly similar goals with Wittgenstein in terms of what philosophy can, and at least as importantly
cannot, provide.

In this paper we discuss visualizations in mathematics from a historical and didactical perspective. We consider historical
debates from the 17th and 19th centuries regarding the role of intuition and visualizations in mathematics. We also consider
the problem of what a visualization in mathematical learning can achieve. In an empirical study we investigate what mathematical
conclusions university students made on the basis of a visualization. We emphasize that a visualization in mathematics should
always be considered in its proper context.

In this essay I compare Nussbaum’s and Arendt’s approach to narrativity. The point of the comparison is to find out which
approach is more adequate for practical philosophy: the approach influenced by cognitive theory (Nussbaum) or the one influenced
by hermeneutic phenomenology (Arendt). I conclude that Nussbaum’s approach is flawed by methodological solipsism, which is
due to her application of cognitive theory.
